One Watch Experiment

I strongly rethink my behavior of collecting watches these days.

Because recently I came to an point where there was not much joy about it. The opposite is the case. I have really stressful feelings about my state of collection it’s size. And that shortly after I purchased the Hanhart 417es which was a big purchase for me and is doubtless an excellent chronograph. I am in the honey moon but I have to much watches. I think it is time for following the trend of downsizing ….

There was always this romantic idea of the one watch collection. Of course everybody knows it. It is a myth. But why don‘t we just test it before going there?

Of course the choice for the one and only watch is the 114270 Explorer in 36 mm. Every other opinion wouldn‘t make sense at all and you know that.

That means at this point I would replace my Sinn 556i…. Could my heart survive this attack on its solid state?

Also a few Seiko divers, a vintage Omega and a lot of Casios have to leave me then. Of course one Gshock Square has to stay for surviving the zombie apocalypse. (Which one?!???!111)

PROs:

- Concentrate all emotional memories on one watch and make it priceless

- less thoughts on which watch should I wear when on which strap

- Less financial costs (purchases and services in the future)

- Having a Rolex

CONs:

- less executing the watch hobby

- No new experiences with watches

- RIP Sinn 556i

- Risk of regret selling

Before making this huge step I want to test out the concept of having one watch only. I will put any other watch away and will wear my Sinn 556i in every occasion. Of course it will more then just do the job. Maybe I cannot sell my Sinn after that and it will be my one and only.

Do you think you can become a one watch guy? Is it even possible on purpose?

Am I completely crazy and overthinking a hobby / addiction? Maybe

EDIT:

Nope not for me 😂

You are suffering from madness. Please seek professional help! One watch collection = a stay in an asylum!!

Hide the lot in the loft for a year, see what happens. You will either relax and will not care about them and it will be an easy sell or crumble and relapse. I would think that you would stop coming on hear and stop subscribing to YouTube channels and the like as if you don’t it will wind you up (pun intended 😁) good luck 👍

This comment is on point 👌🏼 definitely hard to walk away from the hobby when you have a community of enthusiast and your social media algorithm continuously teasing you with all these beautiful new releases or watch deals you didn’t expect to get

Ok here watch collecting clearly is discribed as an addiction 😂

We will see what happens

To each their own, ain’t it?

This is actually exactly what I do (though not for a full year) I have my "chopping block" watches in a box that's out of reach and if a month or two goes by without me wanting to wear them, I know it's time to sell. It works! Minimalism essentialism etc...

I mean, that hash tag is applicable to literally any post on this site. Not really fair, considering the nature of this hobby.

Sort of a first world hobby, at least the actual collecting and not just the enthusiasm. Therefore any problem would inherently also qualify, as you said.

I think you have to be a person who doesn’t care about watches to be a “one watch guy”. That would be difficult for anyone on watch crunch.

When your priorities in life change, you will become the elusive one watch guy. And you won’t even notice it happened.

I have no interest in wearing just one watch. To each his own

·

Spoiler alert it doesn’t work at all 😂

From experience I was once a one watch believer and person then I had just two watches. Until both batteries died and I got sick with Covid bored in the house surfing on line for another watch and youtube. In the rabbit hole I feel. Now 18+ watches later find myself thinking. If I ever go back to one watch it be my Casio G shock multi band 6. Where I don’t have to worry about batteries and mechanical maintenance. It has to be a major life changing events. Or a serious, serious Rambo style monk mode. Or a survival event where the zombies or barbarians at the gate grab emergency bug out bag and favorite watch. It will be one man one watch survival. But for now I will enjoy my collection to the fullest.

Fun of collecting.. involves collecting!

Without owning quite a few watches I wouldn’t know which of them I absolutely fell in love with

And lastly:

Sinn > Rolex, don’t do it!

I want to get a Sinn as well 😉.

BTW, we do an annual game here called #1wc.

It’s hell, and wouldn’t wish on anyone.

Here I am lap swimming with a GS spring, on leather 🙄. #1wc

So one more reason: We own lots of different watches, to use for lots of different purposes!
