Watchwinders

I’ve been told it’s better to keep my automatic watches running with a watch wonder when not in use. Is there any evidence? What do other Crunchers do?

I've often thought the same thing!

I use watch winders. Mainly it keeps the dates accurate. They're not essential but when you have a watch problem like I do, you like to get all the accessories as well!

That's marketing bs to make you buy more unnecessary stuff.

Modern oils don't dry. Winders just add wear and tear to the watch with no benefit.

Only exception would be a complicated perpetual calendar you'd rather not spend 10 minutes setting up every time.

I tend to agree but you can't deny they look cool 😎

There are only two reasons for a winder:

  • you don’t want to correct the date after you haven’t worn it for longer (especially with complicated calendars)

  • you like it as a display in your home

I like to set and wind my watch in the morning so I see no use of a winder

·

In case watches are not running very accurately, keeping them on a winder will make them go minutes ahead or behind the exact time, so you will still need to adjust them. You will also need to adjust the date from time to time. So the main benefit is not substantial, in my opinion.

I keep the 3 in my current rotation wound daily using good old hand power. I just wind the others I have about once a month to let the mechanism run periodically.

·

I personally do not use a winder and have also heard from other sources that modern oils do not need to use winders anymore. It just adds needless wear and tear to the watch.

Got 2 winders as complementary gifts from watch purchases. Never opened the boxes, never used.

Yes I got a Wolf watch winder when I bought my bb58, like you I've never even opened the box!

·

I put my Speedmaster on one once, it didn't seem to work!

·

They may do more harm in terms of constant friction than utility. They are a no go for me.

·

Got one, a posh orbital jobbie as a gift.

Ill never use it. At nearly £500 a service for my pride and joy I'm keen to keep the service intervals as far apart as possible. The wear on my watch is done by me, not a pointless machine....😁

·

For me (important point), I see no use for a winder.

Keeping a watch constantly running wears it out faster & thus requires more frequent servicing of the watch.

The only use I mighthave for a winder is if I had a super complicated watch that took forever to set each time I wanted to wear it and with quartz being available, I see no reason to ever have one.

That said, if you like the look of them and want one, get it. It's the same paradox all of us encounter when we still have mechanical watches over quartz, and a lot of us buy mechanical watches knowing they really are not as logical as we want to believe.

I enjoy Spencer Klein's YouTube channel. He is a Master Watchmaker who specializes in vintage Seiko restoration. He did what I consider the "definitive opinion" video on watch winders.
