How cheap does a watch have to be to always be worth it?

I paid $40 for this Studsgaard Aviator S0011, which is a 316L steel quartz (Seiko VD53) chronograph, with sapphire coated mineral glass, it features a rotating outer dial.

For me it's already worth it, because I like it. But my question is would you buy it?

Would it change your answer, if it was made by a different brand, like Casio?

I’m not too proud to say the brand does matter to me. That said, at $40, most watches are worth it.

I completely understand. Brands gives us a comfort in what quality we can expect. 😊

No it wouldn’t, because I don’t like date@4.30.

I wouldn't buy it.

Not a fan of slide rule bezels no matter the price/brand.

It might scratch the itch for a Flighty (maaaaybe even a Speedy?), and at $40 it's hard to not take a flyer on.

But, I have goals & limits that make it so I have to pass.

It’s not my cup of tea personally as it’s quartz. However if it had a decent quartz movement I would say it’s certainly worth the $40 if you like the design.

Edit: Seiko quartz. I wouldn’t buy it personally, but I don’t think you can really go wrong here.

In a moment of weakness I might say “I can use anothet gray watch”. But I think I’ll stick to the sale/clearance section! 🤪

Its a Seiko without the branding but better with the internal bezel and sapphire. Bonus points for being far cheaper.

Brand definitely matters, but that watch looks quite nice so yes, I would wear it. Especially at that price. Not every watch needs to be collector worthy.

I completely agree. 😊

No, but that's a product of my age.

I'm 53 & over the years have moved up in tiers (unintended), which means my "base level" has moved up - I'm sure I'm not the only one who has experienced this.

I really don't consider myself to be a watch snob. I buy used because it's cheaper, but anything I've had below £500ish just ends up disappointing & sold on or gifted .

As I said, I'm sure I'm not the only one in this position.

I already have 2 watches from the brand Studsgaard... And yes, you really get quality for the money... So definitely a win win situation if you don't just go for the expensive brands...
