Married with watches

What does your spouse, partner, significant other think of the hobby. To my surprise, the wife recently hinted to a blooming interest in watches.  It all started when she began seeing and following Anne on Instagram and started looking at watch advertisements in magazines. Unfortunately she wanted a panda Daytona and an Explorer 2 and I had to break her heart when I told her the truth about those watche, haha. Still the seed was planted.

Before Christmas I had acquired a new 3861 Speedy and decided to sell the old hesalite 3570.50 when she saw it and decided she wanted to keep it. Despite her barely 6” wrist the 42mm Speedy looked absolutely great on her. The next watch she acquired from my collection is the second John Mayer GShock which is also a behemoth on her wrist but she still managed to rock it. She has had watches before - a Tank Francaise, a Santos Medium we were already sharing, and a Datejust given to her by my parents after we got married - but they did not interest her like the ones she ”commandeered” from my collection. And just recently she wanted to read my “A man and his watch book”. I guess my mission is accomplished! She absolutely hates the fact that she is starting to like watches like I do but we come from different paths: I like the historical and engineering aspect of watch collecting more and she likes the aesthetic and accessory aspect more.

She’s not giving up on that Daytona she said.

Bought the wife a Berhardt Delphine years ago. Then a two tone diamond TAG Aquaracer that stays in the safe along with her engagement ring and tennis bracelet. Bought us a Certina 125th Anniversary set. She wears it at times but nowadays, since she works in the OR, she is usually wearing her Apple Watch I bought her.

I looked at that Delphine watch! That’s looks pretty cool and comes with an extra strap too!

“When did you get that?”… it’s a trap! Don’t answer!

I had been interested in watches for a few years before I started collecting. The watches that really interested me were all relatively expensive, and I had been hesitant to mention to my wife that I was planning on spending several thousand dollars on a watch. Much to my surprise, one day she mentioned to me that she'd like to get a nice watch for herself.  I seized on that opportunity, and started showing her some watches online. She really liked the look of the Rolex Oyster Perpetual, so we headed down to our local AD to check them out. We both ended up with silver dial OPs. That was back in late 2018, when it was still possible to walk in off the street and walk out with a Rolex on your wrist (well, at least an OP or DJ).

My wife isn't really into it, but she has an antique business and has found several nice watches at estate sales.  She found a 50's Hamilton at a sale last year.  I cleaned it up, and put a nice leather band on it and gave it back to her, she loves it.

I for one am glad my wife doesn’t share my interest in watches.  I’d rather she not realize how much money went into my little hobby.

Try to ease her into it. You might be pleasantly surprised. That's what I did with my wife. She is now very interested in learning about watches and we frequently discuss that brand or that brand or this story about the other brand and so on. She has no issues with prices.
