Making Pocket Watches Useful Again

I inherited my Dad’s Waltham Pocket Watch and for years it sat unloved collecting dust on a shelf. Last year I was considering buying one of those Seiko Clocks that hommage their Dive Watches to use as a Desk Clock. It hit me why not actually use that Pocket Watch.

Couldn’t find a Stand I liked for what I’d pay. I then noticed this unused aquarium wood had a hole perfect for holding the Watch. Boom instant attractive desk clock with some heritage and sentimental value.

Anyone else actually putting their Pocket Watches back into active service?

Only if I live in Victorian era, maybe. Otherwise im using my also-obsolete mechanical wristwatch.

Ooh, a Montgomery dial. I just carry them around like a pocket watch. You've already got the watch chain. One of the many great things about a pocket watch is that your wrist can be free of a watch.

I inherited a pocket watch from my grand father that probably himself inherited it from his father... It's not working but I really want to learn how to fix it so I can use it !

I would not have the moxie to actually wear it unless I was going to a Steam Punk festival lol. I'm not one to dress or do things that make me stand out in a Crowd. I like to stay hidden in the background like the Base Player in a Blues Band.

I’m actually in the process of fixing my Dad’s other Pocket Watch for my Brother.

I don’t typically like fixing other people’s timepieces as I’m pretty amateur but figure hey it’s not working worse case is it would be still not be working lol

I do not have a pocket watch, a display log, or the desk to keep it on, but now I want all three. I fancy that terrarium/vase thingy too. Nice setup.

I often wear mine.

Wear it in a pocket, workman style, not on a vest and nobody even notices it.

lol thanks. Before getting into Watch Modding/Restoration I was into Aquariums but one can only have so many Aquariums until one hates their Aquariums so I moved onto watches. That Terrarium is pretty new. My wife registered us in a workshop that was the result.

To be fair, pocket watches aren't limited to that era. Pocket watches were used by railways in the U.S. and Canada as official timepieces well into the 20th century, until around the time of WWI.

Nothing is more discreet than a pocket watch! It lives in your pocket, unseen until needed, and the chain is hardly noticable; and if you are brave enough, you could even remove the chain, if you aren't afraid of dropping it. And besides, even though they are uncommonly used, pocket watches are still seen as "neat" and "cool" by most people. No one in their right mind would make fun of you for wearing one. And if they do, ignore them; their own ignorance is their greatest impediment to their own self-edification; i.e., they're morons. 😎

Not a bad idea and it gives me an excuse to buy another

This one was passed down to me after laying in a drawer for close to 100 years, it is dated 1827. I had my jeweler cut off the bow and solder lugs on so I can wear it.

Does it work?

Oh yes it works well, key wind & key set.

I love pocket watches, I just wear them in my pocket 😅. I’d love a pocket watch with shock protection and some resistance though, as the 1880s fuseè pieces I own are rather fragile.

Mine has some shock resistance, The one I just fixed for my brother has pretty much zero but is still running (well again) as it closes in on 100 years old.
