Sinn New Releases!

Wow, I opened my email today and saw Sinn's new Spring releases and I lost my mind. There's an incredible reverse Panda chrono that's a limited edition. Even more exciting for me was the new U50s. I love the U50 and have had my eye on it for some time but I didn't like the hands, especially the red on them. I LOVE the Sinn sword hands. So when I saw these new U50s have sword hands, I lost it. And the dials have oil, like Uboats! To deliver incredible legibility and make it feel like there's no crystal over the dial.

Only after getting into the details of the text did I realize you can't have a mechanical watch with Sinn's oil dials, you can only use quartz. So now I have to figure out if I'm ok with that...

You can’t have a mechanical watch with an oil filled case. Has to be quartz

·

I NEED a Sinn so bad.

·

Agreed with @Draeger22

No way for an auto movement I'm aware of to power through oil.

Also fyi, for batt changes have to go through Sinn, so figure that into cost analysis.

Ohhhhhh, interesting on both counts.....hmmmm....

Aha, thank you! What a bummer...

This is making me think this might be a time to be ok with having a quartz, which I typically don't want. To get the oil, which is a really awesome feature...

Exactly right. Have to have the oil drained and then replaced at the factory. They say it’s like an 8 or 10 year battery life, but it has to be sent to Germany for it.

There are a ton of people who mod their quartz watches by filling them with oil. Look it up on YouTube. A popular one is to mod the Casio duro like that. It also has the benefit of DRASTICALLY improving the water resistance depth because you are completely removing air from the case.

Seen a ton of Timex Q's on Reddit too.

Extreme/shallow angle legibility. Don't know if having the battery hatch on the back aids with refilling the case each time with oil.

Also know if oil filling a watch that doesn't have a movement designed to "push" through the oil it might cause small accuracy issues and/or consume more battery maybe 🤔?

Have always found oil filled stuff cool, but too much of a hassle for DIY. And Sinn hasn't made a countdown, tegimented diver yet 😂.

·

It is indeed a Ronda quartz. Nothing wrong with quartz!!

·

A bit torn on the change of the hands. Do like the sword hands but the syringe hands are pure U50 and so unique and just 🤌

Just to be pedantic! Cause otherwise whats the point of online forums!

This isn't the same as the U50, AT ALL but is technically a mechanical watch with oil. Powered by a ETA base movement in a separate housing.

Cool stuff, not something I'll ever be in the market for at close to $40k though...

Lol, with enough money anything is possible. True story! IFYKYK 😉

Definitely stupid cool watches tho! Forgot about them tbh.

Why is that? I thought the Ressence Type 3 was fully oil-filled. Went back to their site for a closer look after seeing this post and found that the bottom half containing the mechanical movement is indeed air-filled. Is this to do with the fact that the moving parts would encounter too much resistance in the oil which would slow down their operation? If so, could a mechanical movement theoretically be designed for an oil-filled environment?

·

No idea, but I’m sure the hair spring in a normal mechanical watch could in no way operate with its normal oscillation. I’m sure something designed specifically for that could work. No clue.

To each their own!

Though only oil is filled on the dial side.

The oil isn’t in the movement. The dial and movement are separated by seals apparently, so not the same thing. And then there’s the cost 😉

Now sinn has made my perfect watch one year too late

I had a sinn Ux and loved it but it was just too big and over 200g on the bracelet. Ended up selling it and getting the u50. This is a fantastic watch but I’d prefer the hands from the Ux. The oil filled case is amazing it has a piston on the case back to allow the oil to expand and contract without having a bubble and the week spot this causes. They have a movement as accurate as a grand seiko quatz and 7- 10 year battery life. I’d this comes with the new clasp I might be temped to sell the U50 for one of these

They charge around £200 every 7to 10 years so not too bad they turn them around in a couple of weeks

I knew it wasn't crazy, but I've personally run into two dudes who didn't figure that into the down the road cost, hence why they had oil filled fashion statements on their wrists.....and checked the time with their phone. 🤐👎🏻

I am liking the oil U50

Glad you're liking the U50. It looks like the quick adjust bracelet won't be available on U50s at first. From Sinn's website:

When Will This Buckle be Available?

Although Sinn is announcing this new buckle now, the rollout to all bracelets and watch models will take several years. Initially the buckle will only be available from Sinn as part of a complete bracelet, and only to fit these specific models:

·

Ooh that’s one tempting surprise!

·

Love that it’s well designed and well made.

·

The red markers in the dial are something I don't remember seeing before. Really nice!

·

This U50 and hydro is just 🤌. Chef's kiss. It's going on the list of possible future divers.
