Rotating Bezel

The rotating bezel. On a dive watch to allow those who enjoy aquatic experiences to know when to return to the surface. And now in the 21st Century it has been reimagined as a device to allow the technologically challenged (me) to know when my lasagne is cooked. Yes, I could have used the digital timer on the oven but my sin wasn't around to show me how it works! I think I will have to collect dive watches so that I am always able to boil an egg.

I guessing most dive bezels aren't used for diving anymore,at least your lasagna was cooked properly

·

Aaahh, yes! The EggTimer 👌 One of the most functional complications. Love it 💖

I have an idea. You know they made those free spinning hubcaps? Let's make a free spinning watch bezel. Imagine wearing your dive watches one fine evening and you want to show off to your homies. Just spin the bezel and take a pose, yo! 🤣

Didn't MB&F do a fidget spinner miyota novelty? Bit off topic, sorry

Yes, but my idea's better. Instead of a free spinning rotor on the watchface, we give them a free spinning bezel. Take that MB&F! Word! Pew pew! 🎉🎆

Well, I find the moving bezel inadequate as a lasagna monitoring complication. The problem is that there is no alert when the time is up, I would have to repeatedly monitor the relationship between hands and bezel. And many a burnt meal is testimony that this does not work for me.

So instead, I use either:

  • the timer on my oven - which is not ideal, as my oven is a long way away from my personal computer which I would typically want to spend time on

  • my mobile phone - as an intermittent user of that device it is often out of charge though

  • my mechanical (wind-up) egg timer

  • a digital watch, most often my Skmei, either schwarzkopfing it, or wearing it instead of a mechanical for the rest of the day

What I don't use is: (i) the tablet computer, as it is almost always out of charge and (ii) my Poljot mechanical alarm, as it has a shite power reserve (therefore, I never wear it) and its daily alarm complication is too cumbersome to deploy for this task.

Add different dive watch for every different bird species

·

Stick a smart speaker in the kitchen. Job done.

(I use the bezel so I can check now and then, or if it’s cooking I am actively involved in, like spag Bol. Get tired of alarms.)

That's a very German answer 😂

I happen to use the dive bezel in the kitchen alright. I just stay mindful of the fact that I have food cooking on the stove, and glance at the watch every now and then to make sure I don't overcook or burn it.

I also use the dive bezel at the swimming pool, to keep track of my time limit of 1 hour.

I can't operate a timer on an oven. What chance do you think I have if setting up a smart speaker? Although I could swear at it.....

·

I personally use my flight qualified by nasa for all manned space missions chronograph to time my lunch breaks.

It comes pre set up in some cases 😆

And if not, in my experience, it’s been easier that setting the clock on my oven.

·

At what point would you need the precision of a chronograph to time that egg or lasagna?

·

I use the rotating bezel for all sorts of timing purposes, from a back up to my dive computer to an elapsed time reminder in a sail race, a travel time reminder, to cooking and appointment reminding. I find the rotating bezel extremely useful.

·

I use chrono for making coffee or tea and the dive bezel timer for things like laundry or brazing.

·

I find that a bezel is a great cure for procrastination. Nothing like setting a timer on your current bit of wrist candy to motivate you to start working on the task at hand.

This weekend in the UK it was nearly Barbecue weather. I used my bezel to time how long it took me to clean the barbecue. Admitted said watch wasn;t on my wrist as I did it, but I probably wouldn;t have cleaned the barbecue without that extra motivation.

·

I like Brew's take since I do enjoy a good cup of coffee, extracted at the proper time. Still don't own one yet, hmmm....😉

And as others have noted for analog timing of a specific observed event for backup when you forgot the batteries to your timer, your phone is out of juice or it's just faster to spin the bezel than take your gloves off again.

I'm going to stay purely analogue for my kitchen antics. Having Alexa tell me to turn off the oven us too close to robot domination!

Excuse me whilst I adjust my tin-foil hat......

You know , when you cook anything, if your smart you watch what you’re doing and while your in the kitchen, clean shit up 😝

That smacks of multi-tasking.

I'm still on the "learning to breathe without being prompted" stage.
