How do you take care of a large collection?

I know I’m a newbie to watch collection (I just have a few casios, one tissot, one citizen, one seiko and couple of fashion brands — all quartz), but I was fascinated by some people having the entire alphabet and then some of watches, 30-40 watches, endless and very exhaustive list of beauties.

I’m not much of a collector, I just buy what I feel I would like to wear on different occasions. I cannot dream of being able to afford some of the brands in this lifetime even from a secondary market — so I know I have some limitations of becoming a watch collector. So I guess I have mentally conditioned myself to being an enthusiast than a collector.

So I have a few questions for you fellow Crunchers:

Are you a collector or an enthusiast?

How do you take care of your watches?

Do you wear one every day to keep them in rotation?

Do you feel bad / left out because of all the watches you couldn’t buy / afford? Or do you take a positive view to life and enjoy what you have?

I don’t know what to classify myself. I just keep them in the watch box until I need them. I wear one everyday and rotate as needed to match my outfit and the occasion. I don’t feel guilt for inanimate objects.

I have another tool box in my garage with tools. This box a birthday present from my younger daughter holds the watches that I keep at home. I have some in a safety box at my bank. I have been an enthusiast for more than 50 years, buy what I can afford, not at all concerned about the next guy’s watches. Started with vintage, investigated the big names when the hobby was simpler.

Hi I don’t have quite as many as you’re talking about as I only have space in my collection for 22 watches. I set this limit on myself last year so that I don’t go too crazy but for me.

I think you can be both a collector and enthusiast. I definitely think I am, as I’m enthusiastic about my watches and I definitely have a collection.

Not sure what you mean by take care, I keep them clean mostly by wiping them down before they go back on their cushions and into their display box.

Yep. Occasionally I wear a new one a few days in a row just because it’s new and I love it, otherwise I change it up everyday, and I try to set themes to each day that I try to stick to: microbrand Monday, Titanium Tuesday, etc.

I’ve set myself a budget of €1000, and I’ve only broken that once for my Farer, but otherwise I’ve kept to it. There’s been a couple of times when I’ve seen a watch I’ve really wanted such as my latest watch my Raymond Weil

That has an MSRP of over €2500 as nd what I’ll sometimes do is I’ll trade in something to get it under my budget, or I forget about it. I’ve told myself that my budget is going to go up once my kids are a bit bigger, but we’ll see, I really like the watches I have, so I’m not sure how much over budget I’d feel the urge to go.

Hope that helps.

  1. There is no A and B. One can be equal part enthusiast and a collector. Trying to separate the two for the sake of a point is, well, pointless.

  2. They all stay in a box and are wound regularly if not worn. When they need service, they get it.

  3. Maybe. Whatever I feel like that day.

  4. Never worry about what I cannot afford and only focus on enjoying what I am fortunate to have.

Have over 30 watches. Mostly sub $500 USED. Personally feel blessed to be able to afford even just on of my the many in my collection. I have slowed down for a few months on buying and spending more time just enjoying what I have.

Purchasing custom mod parts and straps also have been feeding the beast

My collection stands at 41 and I have gifted/purchased my son about 8 watches. So I would be at 49...a modest amount compared to others on WC. I keep them in watch boxes and rotate daily, sometimes twice a day depending on anyone occasion. My collection has some of my grails and the rest sub-1k. I feel extremely fortunate to be able to have acquired my collection.

I have a dozen watches. Three of them are no maintenance G-Shocks. The others are mechanical and will require minimal maintenance over the next decade.

I don’t own or buy watches that don’t have a place in my collection. I have to have a use case that pushes it into the wear rotation. That works for me.

I don’t class myself as anything apart from someone who appreciates watches. They’re just another thing that I like, similar to my love of adidas sneakers. I end up accumulating them over time, and I buy them based on my taste and by quality, not price. I have 9 watches, 3 GShock, an F91W, PRX auto, 2x Seiko 5 autos, a Seiko speed timer chrono and a fashion watch I was gifted. They all stay in my watch box which has 10 slots. The autos get rotated so they’re worn or at least wound once per week to keep them running.

My sneakers number about 30 pairs now, and they take more looking after 😂

I have reduced my collection down quite a bit. I keep them in a watch box and the evening before I select the piece Im going to wear in the morning take it out, wind and set date if need be. I still have a few I dont seem to wear and they will go soon enough.

Are you a collector or an enthusiast?

I am clearly an enthusiast.

How do you take care of your watches?

I'm largely taking care of them myself, from easy battery swaps, to modding and possible future services. I therefore own watches with standard movements, mainly the NH3x variants.

Do you wear one every day to keep them in rotation?

I wear one every day because I have been wearing a watch on a daily basis since I was 9 years old. I only buy watches that will work with my outfits and that I would like to wear. I also wear all my watches.

Do you feel bad / left out because of all the watches you couldn’t buy / afford? Or do you take a positive view to life and enjoy what you have?

I can afford a lot of watches. But that doesn't mean that an expensive watch would bring me joy. I largely don't care about what others buy.

Are you a collector or an enthusiast?

Started as an Enthusiast. I am at Watch #18 now

How do you take care of your watches?

I don’t.. Keep them in box and clean them when I am bored.

Do you wear one every day to keep them in rotation?

Yes, sometimes wear 2.. morning and an evening watch. And AppleWactch if and when I workout.

Do you feel bad / left out because of all the watches you couldn’t buy / afford? Or do you take a positive view to life and enjoy what you have?

Bad… no.. that is the beauty of watch collecting.. you work hard or smart to make lot of money to fulfill your hobby.. My positive attitude is to figure out way to make enough to enjoy family and life.. save some for later and buy what I want without breaking the bank..

1. I am definitely an enthusiast with a growing collection of watches.

2. Watch box is a must have and the box must be in a room with nice temperature (to avoid condensation). Idk if it’s true but another watch collector told me “mechanical watches looses time when under high temp, and gains time under low temp” 🤷🏻‍♂️

3. Yes, simply because I truly enjoy watches and some pieces not only tells time but also stories from the memories made while wearing them, or how the watch was acquired.

4. Getting into watches in todays time, we’ve got so many options. Enjoying what I have is enough for me. I’d rather spend my money on time pieces that I won’t stress about if lost, scratched, stolen and at the same time gives a good bang for the buck. I keep it sub $1000. I’ve also learned from joining watch groups (like watch crunch) that I can admire/enjoy pieces from a distance, I don’t need to have it to enjoy it. Watching videos and researching about it scratches that itch. Not only I save more, I also learn more to make wiser future purchases 😁 so no I don’t feel bad at all.
