Even though its a sore topic: Engraved Backs!

So ive practicly decided my next watch will be a lorier and ive posted about it before and one big fan of lorier @solidyetti helped me out and answered a bunch of my questions i had about the brand!

He also brought to my attention that lorier offers an engraving service for their casebacks! I know i know, what about resale but i really dont think ipl ever resell a watch unless its upwards of a certain price point.

Anyway, ive thought about what to engrave and one of the things that came to mind is a sad event i am going through right now and when i look back in the future will just remind me of the suffering. Its not something i can look back on and say “i pulled through”.

So to the main point, even though i probably wont do it, would u engrave something on your watch that will bring bad memories to commemorate that point in time? Or is this watch supposed to make me happy so i would engrave something to make me down on the back?

Just wanted to know evryones thoughts!

Ps. Im not looking back to edit this 😂

Nah. Why engrave something that will bring you sadness? That would be a no from me 👎

My original thought was that it would be as a memorial but i have to agree with u!

To take resale value into account kind of robs the joy out of buying a watch, IMO.

Also, if engraving it will remind of this tough time, why would the watch itself not remind you?

Engrave it if you want. It's your watch. There's no Watch Owners Council issuing approvals.

Engraving to commemorate a bad event doesn’t seem to have any upside.

I did have my Ball RoadMaster engraved, because it was an option when buying direct from them and I wanted to personalize the watch. I don’t sell or trade, so resale is meaningless to me.

Instead of a specific bad memory, why not a particularly meaningful verse, phrase, etc?

Or a particular person's initials who has been there for you?

Or maybe even just your initials?

You could always put a smaller engraving later in the back if needed.

Or even wait, ponder/mull it over, then send it back and have Lorier do it later.

TBH, any competent watch maker could remove the caseback, and then send it for engraving, then reinstall, check seals, etc.

One of the coolest watches I've seen was an old timer who showed me a pocket watch with the full name of every family member who carried the watch previous to him, and he was going to be putting his son's name on it. Not cuz he was dying, but because he wanted him to have it.

Or instead of memorializing the sadness/struggle, memorialize the survival/defiance.

I have a very good friend and fellow tech who has gone through some stuff, we are both HUGE Warhammer40K nerds. TL;DR, he got a metal cuff bracelet custom made with the saying, "Cadia stands."

YMMV.

On an even brighter side, Lorier has the perfect amount of modern movements/reliability, with vintage styling, all at a decent price.

Granted I'm biased (😜), but can't go wrong with their lineup.

Especially looking forward to what they do next. Their Hydra Zulu, with its blacked out case might mean they will dip their toes into some mil flavors.

Maybe an assymetric RAF Chrono, or a distinctly Lorier take on UDT watch... who knows.

What about “in a place where there is no man, strive to be a man.”

The Hydra Zulu is definitely on my 2024 list 👊🏾.

I'm sure you'll pull through no matter what maybe it just doesn't feel like you'll pull through. With that being said maybe the engraving could be a reminder of how you persevered through adversity. #wabisabi. That's a nice ass watch btw 👊🏾.

I agree with the others: your watch, your rules, your choice as to engraving. I would add that for obvious reasons, keep in mind the size of the watch relative to the length the statement you considering for the case back.
