The Tell-Tale Timex

So far, I've read some very humorous comments on WC, really funny stuff. One of my favorites was from Kevin, who likened the loud ticking of the Timex Weekender to the heartbeat sound in E. A. Poe's "The Tell-Tale Heart". He (Kevin) said the Weekender just might need to go under the floorboards.

From previous posts (and thanks to everyone for participating btw) I've learned that people do in fact compliment strangers' watches, that green watches were a much bigger 'thing' than I thought, and that not many actual Seiko owners have scratches on their Hardlex, although that particular post hasn't been up for very long. But now I have to get to the bottom of this Timex Weekender thing.

I haven't gotten my own Weekender yet (where are my priorities??) so I did a rough test on 19 of my quartz watches. I already knew that the only one I could hear ticking in a dead quiet room was my $19.95 Casio MTP-V005, the world's most luxurious $19.95 dress watch. Every other one was completely silent. But maybe my hearing is shot? So I held each one up with the crystal touching my ear to see if I could hear anything. It turns out I could hear v-e-r-y faint ticking from every single one except my Tissot Everytime Large, she of the erratic second hand. Her ticking was quite a bit louder, but also slightly erratic, maybe in perfect synch with her capricious second hand. But even the Tissot was not audible unless held right next to the ear.

Is every Weekender loud? Or is it a quality control thing and it's only certain ones? It seems to fly in the face of acoustics and physics. Is the Weekenders case some fluky super resonant cavity and its dial and crystal acting like a piano's sounding board? There's so little sound to begin with anyway, it seems like it would be muffled, not amplified, as my Super Scientific Audio Test indicated. So if you can HEAR ME ABOVE THE TICKING OF YOUR TIMEX WEEKENDER, would anybody like to offer some experience or insight?

You could just say, "Tom, why don't you get your own Weekender and just leave it at that?" I could do that, but then suppose I got a silent one. Would that prove anything? Besides, at this point I'm starting to wish I'd get a loud and noisy one, the louder the better. Otherwise, I'd feel like I was being ripped off.

The Weekender haunts my dreams. I got mine at Kohl’s so that could be the reason why it’s especially loud.

Then again, it’s my daughter’s problem now since I stashed it in her room. 🤣

My Timex x Todd Snyder military is hella loud too.

But from my collection my two cheapo Swatches, are the WORST offenders.....I hardly ever wear them since I can't tell if it's my tinnitus, the watch, or a combination lololol.

Interesting side note, the Timex Midget and my wife's Timex Waterbury don't seem to have an issue last time we checked a year ago....

The weekenders at my local Wally World seem to be hit or miss....

Yes I just checked, waiting on my girls to make some kids clothing decisions, and I ALWAYS check a watch display, regardless of location...😜😂🤘🏻🤙🏻

Thanks for your reply. I've heard people say they can hear certain watches across a room. Are yours that loud?

Maybe Kohl's will have an assortment of Weekenders. I'll pick the one that I can hear over the sound of the soccer Moms crowding the jewelry case.

Thank you for your participation in this Important Research.

Eh, I'd say it depends. Maybe not a regular room, with fan/talking/birds outside/etc. But at arms length while driving my Fiat Abarth I pick up the swatches. The Todd Snyder Timex seems to be when on a table, right next to it, or when opening a drawer it's in and being right beside the drawer, in a quieter setting if that makes sense?

Due to work stuff I have some low/high freq hearing loss and a smidge (prolly more since it's hard to diagnose) of tinnitus. Whether it's mental or not, white noise is fine, ticks/pops/tocks seem to really bother me or I pick up on them more.

That being said, if I see a watch in person, and I don't notice the ticking when buying, I'll keep it.

My swatches were fun/surprise just because gifts my wife got for me while temp duty in NYC, so I didn't get to try them on.

Thank you. The Swatches must really be loud then. I wouldn't think a Fiat Abarth is a very quiet car.

So far it looks like Timex Weekender and T. Snyder and Swatch are the loud ones. Somebody else might know of some others and come forward, if they dare.

Are you prepared for her therapy bills?

No but I’m prepared for my own therapy 🤣🤪

I don't have a personal Weekender but I have handled one and it is loud. How loud, I can't tell since I haven't had it myself but I would guess on par with a Swatch. Personally my swatches are loud enough for me to notice at work. I make sure to store them in a drawer so I don't hear them at night

Indoctrination! Yes !

Crowded around an Australian watch counter in Meyers women’s section : ( same deal waiting for the wife’s leisure wear purchases) we would have Netball adepts and their Neophyte offspring all dressed identically in their Lycra pleated uniforms & taped ankles adorning expensive Misuno’s etc etc .

It's worth noting that the Weekender is a plated brass case. I suspect that it may not be so much a loud movement as a resonating or amplifying, not sound-dampening, case that is to blame. Plastic Swatches would presumably fall into the poor sound suppression material as well.

Oh yeah, I think they have the ten-year life 2016 cell too, so efforts at efficiency may be behind this too.

Thank you for the information. This is apparently a real thing. So far, little Timex Weekenders and little Swatches seem to be the loud ticking champs. I haven't seen anybody make the case yet for these giant quartz Diesels and Invictas. They need to up their game. We're going to separate the Weekenders from the Weak Enders.

I suspect the big watch/little movement condition is actually quiet as the big plastic spacer allows lots of space and air and plastic baffles between the bitty movement and the case.
