Thoughts on “Mods”

I just got this Seiko GMT Pepsi Mod. Wondering what the crunchers think?

It’s your watch, and you are entitled to modify it as you see fit. You aren’t trying to fool anyone by putting a Rolex crown on it. So, it’s fair game. Good job, btw.👍

I love modding and building, there are different levels of mod, I have some where I have just changed the second hand then others with new hands, bezels etc it’s fun and harms no-one so collect mods or go mod em yourself but have fun they’re your watches and sod everyone else 👍🏻

I’d be happy to make my own mod. Buying a mod though; I’d rather get the real thing…

Good point! A lot less stressful to learn on a cheaper watch than to make a mistake on an expensive piece.

Modders are to watches as hot-rodders are to cars. Just another way to enjoy the hobby.

Good point. I didn’t think of it that way

Mods are cool. Trying to outright fake isn't. This is cool.

It's a way of life!

There needs to be a name for these other than “mods”. I don’t mind copycat mods. Most people don’t.

I'd kinda like a black dial, pink bezel dive watch. A very, very light pink almost white. The only way this will ever happen is I pay for a special mod or Marc from Islander watches does it.

I'm still holding out for Islander watches to do it

Mods are fun fakes are an abomination.

Always cool. One of our finance guys builds his own from AliExpress cases and NH35s.

I’d not have the patience to do all the hand alignment and regulating etc but I love that he does!

I liken it to DIY around the house. I’m the kinda guy who would rather pay someone who knows what they’re doing to get it right. He’s the kinda guy who is happy enough to sit with tutorials and accept a little trial and error.

His first Casioak mod had non watch people at our conference asking “is that a Royal Oak?” You’d think it’d be a bit weird having to say no, but people were even more impressed when he explained how he’d changed it up himself! Wasn’t an issue of being a ‘fake’ in the eyes of non watch nerds.

That sounds pretty sweet! I’m crying out for someone to do a shell pink case and tortoise shell dial to match my Stratocaster. Equally never gonna happen 😂

Interesting. I’m trying to figure out if I have the patience for it as well 😬

Sweet strat. I bet someone could make a dial out of pick guard material

Owning and enjoying, 100%. No problem with me. Selling is a bit more problematic due to the branding and may indeed mislead some people into thinking this is in fact a Seiko.

Bear in mind, since this is a GMT and you might travel with it, there might be countries and legal systems that take issue with this modification. France comes to mind where (I believe but don't quote me) owning branded products that haven't been made by the brand in question is not legal.
