Why the hell would anyone collect watches!

I blame my late wife.

About a year after her death, I was sorting through some stuff and found her watch.  It had stopped. Morgan wasn’t one to wear it daily, this was her work watch to help her time her performances. (She was a storyteller and musician)

We had purchased it on one of last trips to Switzerland, nothing fancy but it was made by Mondaine, the same company that makes the Swiss railroad clocks.  It was also called the M Watch, perfect.  (M stands for Migros, a large Swiss supermarket chain) But for me, it’s the Morgan Watch.

I wanted to wear this watch, it carried a lot of meaning.  I took it to a local watch place and they charged my $25 dollars to replace the battery.  A five minute job with $2 battery.  I though, I can do this myself in the future.  Purchased a basic watch tool kit and startet to look up watch repair videos.  So, one year later I have a work bench, possible too many watches and yes, I’ve since changed the battery on the M Watch myself.

Does Mondaine still make more conventional looking watches like that?

It was last milennium, but I too was paying ~$7 (which would be double that today) for a watch battery replacement at some mall kiosk and peeked over to see them pop a case back with a knife. I realized that the great mystery was laid bare and I could do that myself. I did it so much that the chronograph is now missing hands and the stem and crown have also gone missing, but it still runs.

As far as I know they still produce M Watches for Migros. Love the fact that you can buy a Swiss made watch for little money at a supermarket.

Lovely story. What a great way to keep a memory of someone. Assuming the book in the background my have been one of the stories she performed?
