Travelling With Watches

I work away from home a fair bit, 28 days on rotation / 28 days off rotation. This always leaves me with the difficult decision of which watches to take with me!

My general philosophy is that I take 3 watches:

  • One Automatic ‘toolish’ watch that can be worn onsite during the day, but doesn’t look too out of place on the wrist when we get the odd day off.

  • One grab and go quartz

  • One digital G-Shock or Retro Casio

Just to keep things interesting and mix it up a bit, I also try and take a few additional straps with me.

Normally I travel with the automatic on my wrist, Casio gets thrown in the backpack and quartz goes in the backpack in a small watch case.

This time round the U50, Sea Quartz 30 and Mission Impossible have made the cut and the F-91W for good measure!

When travelling how many watches do you normally take and what is your selection criteria 🤔

I think the 3 of them are perfect i only go with one always a diver

·

I think about what activities I have schedule. In most cases I can go with 2 unless there’s a dress event requiring a dress watch.

·

Great choice for grab-n-go quartz. That’s mine, too. 👌🏼

1-3, sometimes 4 if I need a watch for suits/tux wear.

No rhyme or reason on auto/quartz/digital/solar/handwind.

Sometimes it's all of one kind, others a mix of field/dive, etc.

Sometimes its one watch and a pouch of straps.

·

Depends on length of the trip and if driving or flying. 3+ days I'll take at least two. Less than that, likely just one. More if I'm driving.

·

In 10 days I'm going overseas for 3weeks with my life in a smallish backpack and I'll still have two watches with me- one for days in the field, another for when I need to be presentable. The latter is a comical thought because I'm only bringing one pair of boots, one shirt, and one pair of pants. Somehow I feel like having the "nicer" watch to put on makes up for it.

·

Love this three watch collection, 3 is such a great number to focus on covering your lifestyle bases

·

I generally take three. A diver, dress and my Casio Worltimer. Appears you have it figured out based on your work rotation.

Working offshore?

Oil and gas? 😉

My travel watch. I only take one watch. I try to travel light and only want to have to keep up with one. I always take this one. It gives me the time, a world time function, great illumination at the flick of the wrist, solar powered, atomic accuracy, a chronograph, a countdown timer, a barometer with a weather alert feature that has saved me some trouble a time or two, a compass that has come in handy a several times, an altimeter that is fun to have in mountainous areas, gives me the sunrise/sunset times for wherever I am. Just does everything I could need.

·

I normally bring 2. An automatic on bracelet and a G-shock.

·

I typically take 2 watches, a dress and a daily watch.

·

Taking 4 watches on my trip to NYC soon. Got memory lane friends and family to visit. Taking 2 landmarks watches ( Bulova and Citizen) and 2 back to my roots ( Casio and Swatch) On my normal vacation I take 2-3 watches.

·

Props to you. That’s a tough life being away for so long. Nice that you get 28 days in between, but still a big sacrifice. Great choice on the U50 friend 😁 love that red rubber strap with it. Gotta get myself one. Is that the oem Sinn strap?

Certainly whatever your job duties are and off time activities will greatly determine the choices 👍

·

I just wear one watch my trusty Sinn 105 UTC which tracks 2 time zones

Yep Sinn OEM, is a real comfy rubber strap. The clasp is a little big, but I have learnt to live with it.

·

I have the black oem with the trifold clasp if that’s what you call it. I wish they would just sell the rubber strap and I could just switch the clasp between straps. The red looks awesome 👌

That’s why it’s my travel watch. With my luck it will come while I am at a bed and breakfast in Denver or some such. Lol

·

I only ever take 2 watches. An automatic watch which varies depending on what I’ll be doing and a Casio for working out!

·

There is always space to stash an F91w for good measure!

Oh the watch roll is full and I've got one on my wrist? I'll just toss this in a random compartment in my bag or tuck in a coat or like, fold it up and jam it in my jeans pocket cause the F91w is totally un-bothered. That's part of their charm. 😄

I think it is subjective and depends on the reason of travelling, the environment where you will be travelling and also how many days you are out.

For me usually is:

1. If I am out few days for work, (I would be sort in an office environment usually) I tend to take with me an everyday casual watch either with bracelet or leather strap. Often it is my Hamilton Jazzmaster.

2. If I am on my long summer holiday back to my town where I grew up, I tend to take a beater, a casual everyday and a dressier one.

3. Last year I went to Rhodes in June for a week, and I took with me a light beater (100m WR) to wear it during the day in the swimming pool/beach, and a casual (addsisdive sub mariner homage) for the post afternoon activities, like dinner, bar etc..

·

My traditional has been my Omega Railmaster, with a few quick change straps to change the look for needed occasions. Having only one watch reduces the theft risks. Also the Railmaster is capable of being very low key and not attracting unwanted attention. Plus, I like not having a date wheel, as most of my vacationing is on a cruise and thus date is irrelevant. No date wheel means no consideration of that gearing when changing hour. As far as the watches look versatility I like a canvas to be under the radar and an ostrich for dress. I’ll add pics:

Actually i have the same strategy, its almost always 3 watches and 2 of em never change:

Seiko arnie

Casio world time

And the third is either a diver or field watch, depending on where i go but usually its a squale or tudor

·

The least I taken 2 and the most I taken 4 watches. For me all depends what’s going on. My wife thinks I’m nuts I tell her the same when she takes her dog almost everywhere.
