field watches

I bought this Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical in 2019, when I moved away from Amsterdam to finish this chapter with a watch, I had my eyes on for a long time. I used to wear a Timex Weekender and loved it, but wanted something more mechanical, then this very cheap Quartz piece.

So I bought it, loved it and wore it a ton. Last year around fall which is, according to Instagram, the field watch season, I fell out of love with this field watch. I dunno why, but I still enjoy looking at pictures of field watches online, but wearing it was a different thing. One year later, I popped it on a Bond inspired nato and it clicked again. I love wearing it on this red-green-black and blue-black nato now. I don't know how, but they really pop with a field watch imo.

I guess I'll leave the classic-field watch- green nato in the drawer for a while now.

Does anyone feel the same about looking at field watches vs. wearing one?

Think of your watch as a blank canvas. Each day you put a new band on it to create a new picture!

Yes totally my friend, one of my biggest problems in watch collecting was finding my fit, going off looks alone and not considering the wear of the watch was a long journey, just because it looks good doesn't mean its always good for you.

Kinda the same experience. In 2018, I purchased a Hamilton khaki field mechanical date in 38mm. It is the discontinued ETA 4HZ movement model. Matte black dial and bead blasted holes case. I love the look, the history, and the movement, but it’s just overall a boring watch.

I hate that I only find dive watches interesting. I like my iced out g-shock, and I have another iced out dress watch on the way. Chronographs, field, pilot, GMTs, and dress watches generally do nothing for me. I’ll never get rid of it despite not wearing it due to the movement alone, which you can no longer get in a Hamilton, but it’s just so boring lol.

Field watches are super hit or miss to a lot of people. I think it's because of the more utilitarian (read 'generic') design. Lots can look at it and say "I can get this interesting diver for the same price and it has a bezel" or something similar.

Try it on a black leather nato also, single pass, the cordovan leather ones are especially nice. Dresses it up more and looks dope with the black dial.

Here's my most recent one, the Glycine Combat "Vintage":

I enjoy it more than I thought I would. I generally am drawn to pilot/military/field designs, be it vintage or modern:

Thanks for the recommendation. Do you have a photo of that setup?
