Question: Motorbikes and Watches

So I ride a motorbike into work and I’m terrified of wearing my nice automatics so I wear the pictured quartz Tag. Am I being overprotective or do you reckon it’s fine to wear on a motorbike? Would love to hear your thoughts!

If you drive in the city I don’t think it will harm your watch even it’s automatic one, just enjoy wearing your watch

Yeah it’s just into central London, so max speed of 30mph if I’m lucky! Cheers

Ride Bikes myself but I will normally leave my Watches at home, just in case. Ride safe 🏍️ 💨

This question has come up before. There may be some slight cumulative deterioration from vibration, but that's happening to your body as well. Watch guts are undergoing repetitive impact loads regardless.

My concerns are more that chunkers don't fit comfortably under a jacket cuff and glove, and the risk to watch and/or wrist in event of a crash. Life is to be lived. Personal risk assessment is part of it.

·

I ride too and the discomfort from watch-glove-cuff interaction is enough to have me going watchless. If it were me, I’d get a small watch pouch to keep in a jacket pocket and wear the watch off the bike.

I was the same as you, I used to always use my Tag for riding my motorcycle , just felt safer

I used to have my Casio strapped to my handlebars, but this was before I had an automatic. I actually havnt ridden in a couple years, since my son was born. I can tell you my Miyota driven invitca takes abuse from my impact gun at work, and that’s much harsher than my old Triumph believe it or not. Timegrapher is telling me all is well.

·

I ride too and I've never had a problem with any of my automatic watches and I ride a Harley with a solid mounted engine to frame . RIDE WEAR AND ENJOY

Here's my scoot after a l'il old lady rear-ended me at and intersection this past August.

Luckily both m'self and the Vostok I was wearing at the time walked away without a scratch! 😮 Bike is still in the repair shop all these months later as parts seem to be taking forever 😕

Personally, I’ve had an iPhone break internals from being strapped to a handlebar mount on the bike and an automatic watch power reserve spring snap from vibrations of a power tool. So I now I am very vibration conscious and wear my G-Shock while riding and have my nice watch in a pouch in my backpack (with my phone). But I guess there is no hard and fast rule, it’s case specific and no two are the same, I won’t take the risk personally, but up to you.

·

I honestly do not think the commuting you do will have that much of an impact. Remember most, if not all mechanical watches, have some sort of proven shock protection. So I would say, just wear them if they fit comfortably when wearing gloves. Or just take them with you in your backpack or luggage and wear them when you've arrived.

Vibrations from motorcycles do kill phones, especially the camera, so I think that's more of an issue.

·

I ride, too. MTB also. I wear quartz when riding or doing anything with a lot of vibration. I think movements like the NH35 will stand up to hard use but why bother when quartz is right there?

·

Seeing as a tumble at 10mph can take your skin off, my favourite watches never venture out with the motorbike, auto or not. Especially as the vibrations through mine could unscrew a crown.

·

Should have clarified, I meant from vibrations, not crashing!

·

I only wear mechanical watches and I ride a motorcycle almost everyday, no issues with any of my watches. I generally wear watches less than 12mm, so no issues fitting under my leathers or textile.

You can trip on the sidewalk while walking. Do you not wear a watch because of that?

·

I never had an issue wearing my watches when riding. I guess like many bikers, I wear the cloak of invincibilty. Pic of my modified Kwak ZX9R Ninja.

In central London I’d be more concerned about the watch going missing if I was knocked off and out of the game for a while!

Very true and if I owned a Patek then maybe! I meant more from the vibrations

Youve gotta start somewhere, my first bike was a Suzuki RG125 in suzuki racing colours. I loved that bike and spent all my time keeping it gleaming. Stay safe and keep it on the black stuff?😃👍
