Cutting the Collection in Half

I've recently cleared out half of my watchbox. Have any of you done any major reductions? How did it go, did you feel relief or regret? Did your collection stay reduced? What motivated you to downsize?

I was starting to feel like I was just wearing a watch-of-the-day, rather than something personal. Trying to boil it down as much as I could, while still covering all the bases, these 5 watches are what I decided on:

1. A dress watch: vintage Seiko. Given to me by my dad, so I can't ever sell it lol

2. A watch with an interesting complication: Timex Marlin Chronograph. Astoundingly good pusher action for a quartz and striking mid-century good looks

3. A dive watch: Doxa Sub 200. It's my Christmas present to myself. Wanted one since I first saw it on JOMW a few years ago, but I'm not allowed to wear it til Christmas

4. An everyday watch: Seiko SNKE57. Given to me by my younger brother, so can't sell it either. Very versatile and has gotten more compliments than any other watch I've worn

5. A rugged watch: Casio G-Shock GA-B2100C-9A. I go motorcycle camping a lot, so I need something that won't mind hours of vibration and the occasional fall. I was using an F-91W, but I broke it.

Personally I’ve been focusing on quality over quantity in all aspects of my life. That sounds like a quality collection. 🍻

Been wanting to cut my collection by about the same amount. The only one you list that doesn’t seem like a slam dunk to me is having an everyday watch that is one that you are partially keeping because you feel guilty getting rid of it. I have a few of those and the sometimes fee like blemishes on a minimalist collection. Might not be the same for you though. Would love an update in a few months to see if you stick with it and are happier.

It's always a work-in-progress, so who knows what it'll look like down the line, but I think 5 is probably the perfect number for me... at least for now lol

Cutting mine too, slowly upgrading. 👍👍

I have a pile of watches waiting to be listed on eBay, just haven't got around to it yet.

A diver, something sporty, a grab and go, a complication, a beater, something fun and a dress watch is how I am building my collection. Obviously watches can cover more than one category but I'm aiming for around six in total.

I've only ever sold on eBay, so I can't speak for other platforms, but I've never had an issue there.

Awesome collection!! Staying small is great. Means you get more wrist time with the watches you own and love

Good choice on the Doxa; I have been eyeing the blue one with matching rubber strap.
