Omega Pie Pan Constellation

The Constellation is one of the oldest collections in the Omega lineup, Debuting in 1952, it was intended to be Omega’s trailblazer. The brand’s first mass produced Chronometer wrist watch designed by Rene Bannwart.  The Geneve observatory logo on the casebook indicates that the watch has been performance tested to an accuracy of +6 to -4 seconds per day.

In 1959, Gerald Genta was commissioned by Omega to redesign the Constellation as their flagship collection. Gerald Genta refreshed the aesthetic with the Pie Pan Dial and made the model one of the most iconic and best selling watches.  It is thanks to the Maestro’s renewal of this range that the watchmaking company has been very well ranked for so many years. It was from the design of this piece that Gerald Genta began to be perceived as a “star designer.

The stainless steel grasshopper lugs are the most sought after by collectors like this example, a rare Omega Pie Pan Constellation ref. 168.005 caliber 564. The dial is spectacular, looking like a prism under the sun. The watch is in mint condition, all original parts and glass. The logo, dial, hands and indices are sharp and crisp without signs of patina. It comes on its original beads of rice bracelet.

What’s unique with the caliber 564 is the date adjustment. You have to pull the crown to the second position and push it back to adjust it one day ahead. The first position adjusts the time. Very different from today’s standards.

I’ve always loved the look of pie pan dials, but vintage watches are just too small for my wrist. Fantastic piece!
