Patek Philippe 3700

PATEK PHILIPPE 3700 Sigma Dial

The first iteration of the 5711 Nautilus. The 3700 was conceived by Gerald Genta for PATEK PHILIPPE in 1976 as a competitor to the AP Royal Oak which was introduced in 1972. Because of the quartz crisis brought about by Seiko in 1969, only few examples of this production exist, estimating around 3300 pieces - making it a truly rare limited collectible.

Interestingly, Gerald Genta only spent five minutes sketching the design of the Nautilus, one of the most iconic watch designs of today.

The 3700 is a sleek two hander watch at 42mm in diameter and 7.6mm thick. The dial is hand made by Stern Freres. The applied index markers and polished baton hands are made from white gold, indicated by the sigma logo below the 6 o’clock marker.

This watch has beautiful patina across the horizontal grooves of its ridged dial. It wears comfortably on the wrist, lightweight yet sturdy and has a heft to it. The absence of the seconds hand is perfect, giving the dial a clean, uncluttered look. The date complication just makes the watch a perfect functional everyday piece.

Crazy how poorly done that watch for thousands of dollars is. I mean the patina on the dial looks nice, but it shouldn’t be there.
