Q: How did you get into watch collecting?

On my 17th birthday, my parents gifted me a TAG Heuer 2000 with a silver dial - a watch which I treasure dearly and still wear to this day. The TAG was my daily driver for years, accompanying me into adulthood. It bears the marks of many tumultuous experiences and has the scars to prove it. Remarkably, it is still ticking away tirelessly now, over 20 years later, a testament to its enduring quality. What truly left a lasting impression on me was the stark contrast in quality between the TAG Heuer and all the other watches I had encountered during my youth. I have been on a journey of discovery into the intricate world of watchmaking ever since.

Q: What was the first watch you ever owned?

A Dick Tracy digital watch. It had a spring-loaded deploying mechanism that decided to launch the watch into oblivion one day when the plastic catch broke. Cheap as chips and terrible quality, but fun while it lasted.

Q: Do you have a watch with a particularly interesting story behind it?

My Casio G-Shock G-2110 has survived military jungle training, trench digging, air-force flight school and multiple scuba diving expeditions. The resin band has long since disintegrated and the EL backlight no longer works; but every function I've depended on while I was in the service still works perfectly. The phonebook function even has a few ex-girlfriends saved in it (don't tell the wife).

Q: What is one piece of advice you have for someone just getting into watches?

Purchase within your means, ensuring that it can still put a smile on your face. While individual preferences are valid, the one piece of advice I can offer is: STEER CLEAR of fashion watches. Established brands offer better value for your money, providing you with a well-crafted timepiece that won't fall apart at the slightest bump.

Q: What brands have been getting your attention lately?

Tudor, Omega, Vulcain, Farer, Baltic, Atelier Wen and the always classic Jaeger-LeCoultre.

Q: What is your grail watch and why?

I do not have a grail watch, per se, but I have always regretted passing on the opportunity to purchase the Patek Philippe Calatrava 5296G-001. Which might explain my obsession with sector dials now.
