Vacation Watches

Friends, we are heading to Europe for a couple of weeks and what watches to take with me has been a lingering struggle in the back of my mind. We will be in Venice, Italy and Portorez, Slovenia.

I don’t want to take any of my truly expensive watches, for security and customs reasons, so I believe I’ve decided on the following three timepieces:

1. Christopher Ward C60 Trident Pro 300… will take the bracelet and 3 rubber straps for “dress” and beach activities

2. Seiko Alpinist SBP121 as a go to “dress” and GADA watch

3. Casio Royale AE 1200WH Worldtimer… because hey… I can keep track of 4 timezones!

Btw if I wear one at all times that leaves an empty spot in the watch roll for something new to come home with me. (I’m talking to you, Panerai!)

What are your thoughts, friends?

I'd take the CW and the Casio... The CW can do "dress" and GADA, and the Casio can do anything you're worried about damaging the CW doing.

Great point! Why wouldn’t you take the Alpinist? But that would leave me room for 2 stowaways 🤣🤣🤣

I'd take the Casio and one of the other 2. Depends on where you are going/what type of holiday you are going for.

I don’t have any strap changes for the Seiko so use would be limited to dinners /semi-formal. The CW would see plenty of beach time.

I don't particularly like the Alpinist, and hate the cyclops.

I used to travel with three or four watches, but found I was either wearing one or two, or forcing myself to wear watches just because I brought them.

I'm currently sitting on a plane returning from a trip wearing the one watch I brought with me.

Good point… I probably only need the two! If you made a trip with one, I can make due with two, lol.

I often take two (one GADA, one beater G-Shock), but often just wear the GADA. Being on vacation, for myself, is about relaxing and taking away a lot of the decisions that come with daily life. Being able to grab the same watch, day after day, actually becomes nice. Plus, you associate your watch with the trip, so in the future when wearing that watch you often think back of your vacation, which is nice.

Actually, since you are willing to take the CW to the beach ('cos I usually just wear a digital watch or my Apple Watch to the water/beach/exercise), just bring the CW + straps. One less watch to carry around.

@KristianG is right. The last thing you want to do during a vacation is spend time worrying about which watch to wear and what to do with those you don't.

I used to take a watch roll with me until I realized it caused more bothers and worries than it was worth. The GW-M5610U became my perfect travel and vacation watch, and I really don't need anything else beside it.

One watch and a Gshock or Apple for exercise, if you have cellular on it or just digital/casual/sport. I’d normally say Alpinist, but given how hot it is and it on leather….

·

Take two and come home with three... 😃

·

All great choices. The Seiko really adds a nice pop of color. I really like wearing my CW and yours will be super nice on the beach!

I’d take one with a couple of straps and come home with 2 more 🤣😂

·

CW with a black rubber strap is all you need…..👍🏻

AE1200 gets my vote! Functional, great looks that can fit all occasions, you won't stand out to thieves, and should you lose it you can replace easily.

·

Personally I only take two watches on vacay. One for daily daytime stuff, beach, shopping, visiting attractions, etc. Then a dressier watch for evening wear, dinner, theater, drinks, etc. If I had to choose from those three it would be the Casio for day and the Seiko for evening.

Thank you all for your input… I appreciate the wise counsel. Just another reason why this forum is the best!

I don't ever feel the need to have multiple watches with me on a vacation. I prefer to have one on the wrist at all times. I know where it is, don't have to worry about customs or hotel room theft, etc. I always pick something with water resistance and a screw down crown so it can handle a day in the water along with an evening on the town.

If I was in your situation (and was serious about buying a Panerai while abroad) I probably wouldn't wear a watch, would wear the Panerai for the remainder of the trip, and mail the box and papers home.

Vacations are where a Panerai, Seamster AT, Rolex, or any other number of water resistant watches that walk the line between sport and dress/bling excel! One watch for all locations and conditions.

Vacations are purely for enjoyment. If I can't enjoy my overpriced luxury watch during activities while I'm vacationing what's the point of owning it? It's like dating a supermodel and leaving her at home while you travel.

I have a similar trio for my vacation.

I had considered taking my Rolex but didn’t think it was wise since I don’t know my surroundings and the watch sticks out like a sore thumb. What are your thoughts?

·

I've only been to Venice, but there are so many fake (and real) watches there that I feel like it would blend in. It seemed like there was a luxury watch AD everywhere we went in Italy!

If you're worried though, maybe it's best to leave it behind.

Come home with the Paneri for sure.
