This is a nice intro @celinesimon! One of my very first "nice"watches was a Panerai 312 which I chose because it was the first to use an in-house movement. I loved the watch and collected many straps along the way. Unfortunately, I think my desire for an in-house movement may have been my downfall and after 2 enormously long trips to Europe for repairs, I had enough and sold it. Many years later and the itch is back but my focus has changed to a much more specific plan to pick out a) a non in-house movement and b) a 2 hand model only Luminor. I want the essential design aesthetic with an easy to service movement and the minimal potential for mechanical problems. I'm narrowing down to a PAM 112 (stainless) or PAM 176 (titanium). I really like the new 914 8 days but I keep reading the super long power reserve movements are not very accurate especially when at maximum energy. Would be interested to hear your thoughts and also where you recommend looking for 20 years old Panerais (other than the usual Watchbox, Watchfinder, Crown & Caliber etc). Cheers!
Realistically, are you going to buy more Sinn watches in the future? If so, go for the MOP. I don't know how long that version is going to be produced. I guarantee the regular 556 will be produced indefinitely and there are a lot of other tooly Sinns out there if you want full tool credentials.
Is this an every day watch or more dress watch? If dress, go for the MOP. If every day, + work, + weekend watch go for the regular 556. The second hand on the MOP is close to invisible in silver on the MOP, so not very utilitarian. The regular 556 might also look better on the H link bracelet as it will look sportier and less dressy. Good luck. Either one is a great watch!
RGM is the authorized repair facility for Sinn in the US. I think you're got enough issues here it's worth your while sending it to them directly (or contact Watchbuys to generate a work order). Best of luck!
I've heard of some problems with the new movement and folks having to send their white birches back for regulation, including a watch buddy I know personally who experienced this (after I had heard about this online). Hopefully this issue has been corrected.
Well now the one thing you said which has changed my mind is "The OP just gets very little wrist time". The OPs are worth stupid money right now so if you're not wearing it, there are some pretty darn nice watches floating around for the equivalent value. How about something a little different? The one watch I wish I hadn't sold was my GO Panomatic Lunar. Such a pretty watch!
