Is Cartier the most daring design house in the luxury watch space?

·

Could be, but I find that it’s only the classic designs that I like.

·

Cartier has great iconic designs, but I don’t see them as more daring than any other luxury watch brand maker that is looking back at its history to reissue a new release.

So why does everyone want a Cartier?

  1. Women wear Cartier, which almost doubles its client list.
    2. It sits alongside JLC in the +/- $10K dress watch category. This is a low competition price point and Cartier carry’s a name cache that only Rolex can match.

Perhaps, but it's not as though Cartier is re-releasing an older popular model.  The Pebble was made in bespoke numbers back in the day.

I don’t think it has anything to do with prior models that were popular, just prior models. Longines does this. I wouldn’t call them daring. I just think Cartier has a design style that is unique from the swatch group and Rolex products, which dominate the market as a whole. Continuing that unique design style sets them apart.

Ulysses Nardin and Hublot are both daring, but I would hesitate to include Ulysses Nardin in the same category as Cartier.

·

Good question.

In size and scale.  Cartier is a major player in the industry, while Ulysses Nardin is a niche player by comparison.

Part of me wants to think that Cartier watches are aggressively understated, but then I'd be a hypocrite and contradicting what I said in a different post on here.

"Is Cartier the most daring design house in the luxury watch space?" Not even close. Consider Ulysse Nardin Freak where the movement of the watch is completely on the hands.  The look isn't for everyone but the design is beyond daring.  MB&F is another luxury brand pushing the envelope with their cutting edge design.  I love what Cartier is doing but I would not say most daring.

Contradicting oneself on social media is unheard of.

Cartier isn't and has never been in the discussion of most-daring design house. With the exception of the Masse Mystérieuse (a very limited novelty release), they aren't doing anything too funky. What Cartier is doing very well right now is highlighting the Cartier design ethos of classic good looks.

The article you link to about the Pebble is interesting because it illustrates that Cartier will continue to utilize limited edition releases to drive interest in the brand overall. Unfortunately (for us mere mortals), Cartier was doing this well before the current hype from recent auction prices in the Crash. I can't fault them for it. I think the Pebble is beautiful.
