It’s obviously a dumb statement perpetuated probably by great swiss marketing and rich people wanting to feel special.
an invicta diver that’s under a hundred bucks sweeps while a grand seiko sbgv245 ticks but is better in every conceivable way and hand finished.
Plus, half the country runs on debt for things that they don’t need, so material possessions could also just be indicators of financial irresponsibility more than anything else
Personally I disliked them myself for quite a while. They seemed busy, but I still appreciated that they were beautiful and incredibly complex.
I kind of just grew into liking them. First, the speedmaster, then the Blancpain Air Command. I have the budget version, the Hemel Air League.
When done right, nailing the proportions on a chronograph is a beautiful thing, and having more parts to mess up makes successes all the more evident!
Switched to elastic paratrooper straps (kind of a single pass nato) and never looked back! Love natos too though but I dislike the excess that has to be looped back
If you want variations of the same kind of watch (black diver) an excellent addition would be a Squale x Whatawatches 30 atmos Corso Italiano. Shell cordovan strap, BEAUTIFUL case, 1600 bucks.

For imo one of the best black divers out there, I have strong preference for the OG Pelagos..
A Tudor GMT might make a nice half-break from your black divers by having a pepsi bezel while still retaining a black dial. half and half in a way
Directly on Formex, shipping, taxes and duties are included in the 1500 price tag. On Long Island, with a 5% off it’s lower but taxes bring it right back up to about 1500 :(
Sinn U1 S black and fully tegimented. While I will never trust myself with most PVD things, I would def wear a Sinn. Apparently, if their marketing is to be believed, the Tegiment process makes the PVD coating almost impossible to chip off versus regular PVD coating on untreated metal.
plus the U1 and U50 are favorites and future purchases of mine for sure
