Harry Potter Watches

I’ve wanted to put this together for ages but it definitely needs your help and input.

As electricity doesn’t work in Hogwarts(or around magic) each character must be wearing a mechanical watch, but which watch??

After great feedback, version 1.1 is the current picture.

This is great & super creative! You put a smile on my face! 😊

·

Excellent! However, I'm sure Luna would wear some kind of extravagant crazy design watch... For lunatics 😄

·

You have Voldemort a Hublot! He deff would have a Jabob and Co year of the dragon on something! He’s the enemy of the entire magical world on the quest for the elderwand! To give him a fusion discredits his power, and it will look just as dumb lol

Sadly J&Co didn’t exist back then.

I wanted to give him a Invicta Venom.

Totally agree, but what?

I wanted a Mr Jones but they didn’t exist in 1990.

Out of curiosity when do you believe Harry Potter was based? Jacob and Co was formed in 86’. Harry Potter is based in Modern times but in the magical world paying homage to days of old, which was really only showcased in the 1st 2 movies. Lol I am a big fan!

It might help if I were familiar with the source material but I believe Draco Malfoy was a total boss, so obviously he gets a Rolex Day-date in yellow gold.

Ooh, good choice. Lucius would have definitely bought him that. He was very spoilt. A Rolex DD, fluted bezel, yellow gold, would suit him very well.

I’ve added that to the list.

I LOVE Dumbledor with the 222! The main 3 and Snape choices are perfect as well. Voldemort with a Hublot kills me.

Oh, I thought J&Co was newer than 1985.Harry Potter was born 31 Jul 1980. He started at Hogwarts in 1991. Voldemort was born on 31 Dec 1926.Which J&Co watch would think would suit Voldermort?

Tooo Late 2020. I’m going to give Voldemort a Tank Louis on a green slerpent strap given his age. Though a villain he does seem like a classy bloak lol

Sadly, I can’t have Voldemort wearing the same watch as Hermione. Plus the ‘watch insider’ joke of him having a Hublot is too good an opportunity to miss.

No way a Weasley would wear an Omega. Too lavish. I think Mrs. Weasley would be more of a Seiko Cocktail Time or a Timex Marlin gal. Otherwise, amazing list!

·

The Hublot! 😂

·

Love that Voldemort ends up with a Hublot 😂 The villains watch or Richard Mille would also do it .

Sadly Richard Mille was only founded in 2001. The fact that HP is set way before the recent watch boom is part of what makes this so fascinating.

I see your point but I’m not thinking about a new ‘luxury’ Omega; more like an inherited, 1930s Dennison case piece, before it was seen as the luxury of today. We need to think pre-quarts here. Molly was born in c. 1950. I was thinking something like this.

Sirius Black also came from a rich family, they had a lot of money from the books before he was removed. He also was stuck in Askaban for a while, I would argue he either doesn't wear a watch anymore, and if he did, he would wear something old money - like a Vacheron Overseas for the sporty factor when he was younger and still an accepted part of his family.

James was rich as well, he was able to support his wife and friend through the turmoil years without working - however I think historically, where Rolex was at that time (a common reliable tool watch) I think the family would climb a bit more, perhaps a Cartier of some sort

Final thought is that it would be a sin to not give Albus a super complication from Patek - a 5970 or something. Like that man is the leader of the wizarding world in terms of power and reputation. He would absolutely be wearing a perpetual calendar chronograph.

Ooh, great ideas. I want to give each a watch that fits the JK Rowling idea of telling part of the character’s story, ie Severus’ Reverso.

I struggled with Black, I agree the Railmaster is wrong. I want to give him a perpetual calendar as he was in gaol for so long. Can you think of a suitable ‘old money’ perpetual calendar from about 1960-1980? He was born in 1960.

James, fair challenge, but it was not ‘old money’. It was made through his father’s Sleak-Easy hair product. I think that for a 21st, in 1981, he would have been given something nice but not amazing. They were a humble family. You could argue Date-Just, etc, but I’m biased towards the Explorer.

Albus is very tricky. I might give him a pocket watch - I think that might be best. He would wear yellow gold I think, but he isn’t flashy, yet he does appreciate trinkets, mechanisms and detail. So something that is complex certainly isn’t out of character. It’s got to be period correct though: he was born in 1881, died in 1996. I think he would have owned a lot of watches through his life, but he would only buy ones that gave him some new functionality.

Honestly, Luna comes from a moderately affluent family, I could see her wearing Konstantin Chaykin.

Great call but sadly founded in 2003. So she couldn’t wear one at school.

·

Love it. You know your Lore!! Can you Book/Chapter/Quote reference any (all) of those? Especially Dumbledore and Black, please? I think Dumbledore’s has to be a pocket watch now; I’m not sure about Black, he’s a bit too cool for just that.

·

Thanks. It seems that the Fandom accepts film as Lore; I tend not to agree with that. I do agree that Dumbledore has a pocket watch, but I think that I’ll stick with a wrist watch for Serius.

First, allow me to say that I love this idea, doing a period correct choice, honoring the person. I feel like we are flipping about, as Severus's choice is one of their story, him being a double spy, after all. Whereas for the next three, we find likely watches that would explain their heritage further.

Ill keep to the later (character-building), although I love the former (symbolism).

I think around the time, we would be looking at old money for Black, we could suggest a Vacheron perpetual calendar, 35mm. It's time correct and plays into the ironic truth that his young eyes would enjoy and be able to read the details - giving him less ability to enjoy it if he got older. Patek also had the 3970, and I feel like Patek is too on the nose, VC being a more suitable family.

As for James, I love Rolex, I do. However, luxury and Rolex is a modern day proposition. Before, Rolex was more like modern Timex, a tool watch. Although James does feel like the beloved Explorer as a symbol, I would say that the family would be new money, in this time and new money of the 1980s.. I wow. I hust realized that it could be Seiko Quartz. This would be the cutting edge at the time. Royal Oaks, Genta Patek would be alive at this time, but culturally we didn't care what the old companies did, quartz was slaughtering the old brands. Longines Diver is a choice as well, something tried and true, however we may be looking at a Seiko Astron as character-building. As for symbolism, the equivalent of a passed down classic Rolex is today's message of parents love and sacrifice and so that's fitting as well. I see what you mean

Albus is really tough, and the iconicness of a Perpetual Calendar, Chronograph is just awesome. I feel like they are both very fitting together. I agree the man would wear many watches, he is a fashionable chap in his younger years. Patek makes the form in pocket watches and this could be a good fit. I mean take your choice, you can add in a minute repeater, I've found examples of this pocket watch from the 1890s so the technology existed. This is both character-fitting and symbolic.

I think this is very close, It does not include Draco's internalized challenge. Originally, he thinks about his value through hard work, through the struggle of his family, through the lineage and bloodline. These are the values that perpetuate him. I would likely say that the family, especially through the time period, would be caught dead wearing something so accessible by the public, it would wear something with much more standing tradition. If we are to do Rolex, let's do a two-tone or solid gold datejust. This would be more fitting symbolically.

If we are to do character building, we could look at the old fashion houses, such as Hermes and Bulgari, and do something in solid gold. I have a feeling that the Malfoy family would be extremely loyal to a watch brand and have a huge relationship with a jewelry line.

Kenneth,

Bringing our chats into a single response.

Draco: The Rolex Day Date is by far the more luxurious of the two Rolex (Day Date v Date Just). So, while I agree with your comment, the Day Date (Presidential) is the sort of thing that Draco would wear. I do love the idea of a Family Jeweller; though this would likely be a small British shop rather than a specific brand. But you are right, Lucius would have a tendency to look at the older names, and might think a Day Date a little gaudy. I can see Narcissa wearing a Bulgari and I like the idea of Draco in a historic brand. I think Lucius might wear a George Daniels himself. I have looked at a fair few brands for Draco and I can see Lucius buying Draco an Arnold & Son (or other piece unique) for special occasions but I don’t think that Draco would be allowed to wear that to school. An expensive but replaceable watch is more likely - he is still a kid after all. A Day Date is flashy but Lucius would accept it taking a hit or two. Actually, I’m now thinking a two-tone Datejust might be more acceptable to Lucius - he was a strict father and at age 11, a 31 mm Datejust would wear very well. I'll leave it as the Day Date for the moment but subject to review.

Albus: Given that the book has him carrying a pocket watch, and him being born in 1881, I am siding with exactly that. The book says that “It was a very odd watch. It had twelve hands but no numbers; instead, little planets were moving around the edge”. So a grand complication, with minute repeater would work very well. I've gone for a Patek Grand Comp with minute repeater pocket watch, in gold.

James: All interesting points but we must eliminate any quartz watches immediately, as electronics do not work around magic, and definitely not at Hogwarts. A Grand Seiko (period appropriate) might be nice, but for personal reasons (a privilege I am invoking), I am sticking to the Explorer 1016.

Black: I wasn’t happy with the Railmaster. You’re right, the family did have old money (which he lost access to at 16 when he ran away), so we are limited. Going back to symbolism, I like the idea of a perpetual calendar to symbolise his years in Azkaban. So I’m going to change his watch to a Vacheron Constantin perpetual calendar in gold. Given to him for passing his OWLs, and only a few weeks before he ran away to James’.

I just realized after we talked about about Narcissa, why is no one wearing a Bulgari Sepernti? It's classic, elegant, and devilish.

Like seriously lol

·

Belatrix!! And it is a very old design, so she could definitely wear one. The next stage of this project is to get pictures of each character and his/her watch. Maybe AI could do that?
