Ever regretted a purchase?

I saw a watch and it was love at the first sight. So I bought it straight away. I wore it just a couple times and 'parked' it successfully in my watch roll. Do I love it? I don't think so. Do I sell it? Probably not. Do I regret it? Yes, kind of. What about you, did you purchased a watch and regretted it?

I feel you 🤜🤛

Bought a Tag Solargraph on a spur of the moment…. £2,400……

It was nice, but a lot of money… sold a couple of months later for £1,600, so lost about £250 a month! 😭

Yes Ha Ha Ha! Wait that’s not funny 😢 😁

What a sad story 😢

Some regret i bought, some i regret sold

Orient Ray 2 for me. Bought it impulsively in college for my first automatic. Part of me wishes I just saved up more for a seiko. Will I sell it? I dunno, prolly not

I’m going to upgrade the Pagani Design watches, two of them anyway, to Steinharts at some point. It’s not regret though. The PD Submariner homages served their purpose, and I’ll give them away to a friends kids. But the Steinhart I bought a bit back is so much better I’m definitely upgrading.

If you liked it for several years it sounds like a good purchase

it wasn't an immediate regret like buyer's remorse... just once the watch box gets full you think "why did I buy this?"

·

I never paid so much for a watch that I had regrets. Some I like more than others but I like putting them all on.

Welp it’s settled. Not selling 😆

·

I had a Timex quick set alarm that crapped out on me. I should sell it as broken and move on. I meant to return it when i got back from something but there was a sudden death in the family which made me not wanna bother with it at all

Only one, a Rolex OP bought at the end of the 90s. It didn't take long to feel it was a distinctly dull watch, and then I watched Glengarry Glen Ross and the game was up. Sold within a year.

·

Have bought a watch, opened the box and knew immediately it was not going to work. Sold it without wearing it.

Have sized numerous models, worn once and flipped them.

·

No never. And definitely not anything I've sold or auctioned for charity 🙄 🙄🙄

Microbrands are particularly guilty of this accusation.

I do not hate microbrands.

Some are quite interesting but not when multiple equal a ⌚ one may really want.

The inability to sell microbrands at a reasonable price only compounds the regret.

·

I have made my mind up on several of my choices, but that's just the evolution of my taste. Regret would be foolish, if I can help it.

·

When I started this hobby, I bought several watches on impulse, some of them are no longer there, others are still with me as a reminder not to buy like that again.

Honestly, each of these 3 square Casios.

I bought a Vario leather strap, swapped the modules around into each different case and tried adding fun coloured filters. I just don't really like any of them.

At least they were very cheap.

I like them nevertheless. 👍

And I like your point of view. 👍

I’ve been able to get out of most watches I liked but didn’t want to keep. I’m currently in the middle of my greatest regret. Long story short bought vintage zenith.

It came from Belgium and didn’t work.

Then after more investigation it’s dial had been altered and did not have original movement. So franken-watch…..

Retuned and seller asked for my bank account number and routing number. I paid with a credit card….

Needless to say this may end up being a bank dispute situation 😤

Making mistakes and having purchase regrets... all part of the watch collecting journey 👍🏽

You are kind of right I think. 🥲

Oh I have the opposite problem - regret selling mine. It’s just a great design!

And this is why I don’t browse watches while drinking anymore.

Wise decision 🍻

I bought an ice blue prx last year and while I wear it all the time (the butterfly clasp makes it very easy to grab and run) it was a spur of the moment purchase as they where going in and out of stock then, about a month later I was thinking I would have much rather saved the money to by something I really wanted. But given the hit they take on the 2ndary market and that I wear it all the time so the bracelet is decently scratched it's not so worth it for me to sell

🤜🤛😏

So...my sad regret story is still unfolding as I type this.

My journey into watch collecting started last year, and it started with the biggest regret purchase I've made. I'm literally unpacking this whole thing as I sit here typing. I really need to sell this watch, but even though I fully regret the purchase and I never wear the watch, I can't seem to bring myself to actually sell it. Part of the reason, I think, is because that without this purchase I would never have ended up here on Watchcrunch, and I would not have bought any of the other watches that I don't regret. Part of the reason is because I am pretty sure I am going to take a pretty hefty hit on the purchase price.

Although this watch was my gateway into collecting, my tastes almost immediately changed, and they changed in a number of ways that all lead away from this watch. To be fair, the state of my current collection is similar to many other early collectors in that it is all over the place, but the place that it isn't, is in the direction of that original purchase.

Another reason, I think, that I haven't attempted to sell this watch is that it will actually be my first endeavor into selling a watch. Although I have no qualms about going down the path of selling, I just I know that it will be a bit of a drag figuring out the ins and outs of where, and how, and what to avoid. I have made some inquiries with dealers on trade-in, but that hit was wayyyy too big of a hit for me to take on my first purchase, so I do know that I will need to go some other route. I kind of wish we had a commerce area here, as I feel like that wouldn't be too painful, and I would know for sure that it would be going to someone who will get the satisfaction from the watch that I don't.

Sorry for being a bit long winded here, but I have been holding all of this in for about 6 months, and I did need to get it out. Hopefully this bit of catharsis will be what I needed to get off my butt and get it done. So as not to leave you all in the lurch as to the watch, here she is from the one night I had it on wrist:

It is #215 of 600.

Thanks for sharing your story 🤜🤛

First off all, I think it's a very nice watch. The limited amount of pieces makes it even more special.

If you can't or don't want to sell it now, then don't. Park it safely with box and papers.

Who knows, maybe on day your taste, your point of view or the market changes and you will end up as the winner.

And you are absolutely right - sometimes you win, sometimes you learn. 🤝

·

"Non, je ne regrette rien." Actually, yes, but I'm careful not to pay rrp, minimizing loss in any subsequent sale. However, it's the hassle and risk of selling a watch that's more of a problem. But, from these experiences, one hopefully learns a little temperance, when one is feeling impulsive over the next big purchase.

He’s telling me he refunded me and should be back in my card mid week. But regardless whatever you do don’t buy this watch from sometimes passion out of Belgium. No one should have to relearn my lesson. At least not on this site.
