Rolex 116233 with a green wave dial

commented on GQ Article's Hot Take: "Why True Watch Heads Never Set the Time on Their Watches" ·

I'd like to offer a contrary opinion. I also set my watches, but nowadays I rarely look at them to tell the time. I usually tell the time from my phone out of habit. I have to force myself to remember to use my watch. Therefore I can imagine myself not bothering to set my watches in the future.

By the way, if we cared what time it is, we would buy a gshock or other reliable accurate affordable watch. I bought a Shunbun recently, I look at it often because the dial and markers are so pretty. Not to tell the time

I think Tudor was literally build to sell cheaper "rolex-like" watches. So it literally IS a poor man's rolex. Also, there is nothing wrong with that. I suppose a poor man's Tudor subjectively is any brand that offers tudor/rolex-like watches for cheaper? Ahh... Christopher Ward?

I'm done 'replacing' watches. I'm gonna keep everything from now on! I don't count "cheap" "impulse" wathces as actual purchases for the year. I count watches that are 2-10k expensive, and I don't aim to buy any more than 1-3 per year BUT, having had a breitling, 4 omegas (3 currently), a GO, a panerai and a GS, I'm starting to get desensitised now... There's many watches in that price range that I used to say that I'm in love with, that now I'm not interested in anymore. There is though, one very specific 12k watch, that is so special to me, if it comes up I'll buy it, and possibly buy nothing else until then. So maybe I'll buy that one this year, maybe not....

commented on Would you ever sell your entire collection for just one watch? ·

I've been buying and selling watches for a while now, and I've noticed 2 things: at some point I start missing watches that I sold, and I always loose money when I sell. I've already lost about 5k£ (which is a lot of money to me) and I think my current collection was bought for about 20k, but wouldn't get me any more than 15k£. Therefore, If I started thinking about a 20-30k watch I like, I would prefer to buy nothing else for a decade, and then buy that watch, other than selling my current collection.

You have good friends, if they gift you watches!

To me they are religious items. I believe in human ingenuity, creativity, craftsmanship, technology and science. Owning well made, beautiful mechanical watches are remainders of what humanity can achieve.

You should have added "jewellery" as one of the options. Some people collect them because they pretty 😍
