Sharing some of my (terrible) designs so far! (Design Journal Ch.1)

Super embarrassed to post these on here, but I did say I was going to share some sketches and stuff that I’ve done!

Design wise I mostly just took cues from what I’ve seen in real life, and really just wanted to mess around and have fun with what a watch could look like. Some are definitely more abstract than others, but practicality was never my forte 😅

I would love to know how to draw a proper movement though (or just how to draw/sketch properly in general!) If you have any feedback, both good and bad, please let me know so I can keep improving :)

I like that you are doing things with non-round faces. I'm also super happy to see this original work. New and different is exciting!

I'm still figuring out if I have any easily definable general visual tastes but my off the cuff feedback for design in general is

  1. Find the intersection of function and aesthetics where you can maximize their combined effects. A small dial may be difficult to pull off because people want the face to be as readable as possible.

  2. Use classic design language and do something new. Keep up what your doing.

  3. Consider adding more explicit iconography. I saw the word Beetle and maybe more could be done with that as a theme, for example.

Of course, this is your creative process, so always most important is you being you and, second, wherever possible, doing work you are proud of. My comments be damned.

Anything positive that anyone is doing is a plus brother. We are judgmental humans but what ever puts a smile on your face is what counts. That Aside hit up this website they have tons of vintage Seiko catalogs you will get some great idea for sketches.

I know right 😂 Terrible sketches aside, what watch designs appeal to you most? I’d like to hear them 😊

Thanks! I do like hitting up old libraries of watch design for ideas - cheers for this!

The first one with the smaller dial on the face. If the blank space was filled with something interesting.. that would be a winner I reckon. 👍

Actually not bad.🙏

Maybe turn the second one into a GMT design.

Cuz everybody needs GMTs all of a sudden.

Something like this? I was thinking of making the smaller dial either a 24hr indicator or a GMT. (This was my first sketch of that watch, and therefore can’t get any better than this 😔)

Nothing to be embarrassed about brother! They look awesome and your skills as an artist are very impressive.

the “diamond” shaped in that you’ve drawn actually looks like the Cartier Pebble. you might be on to something!

I really like that one on the top right. Gold case and antique green dial. 😊

I didn’t even know Cartier made a watch like that!!!

Thanks for sharing!

I like the concept of the quarter-Arabic dial with the small GMT dial in the center. Looks great.

I am not sure I have seen a no-date GMT before!

Glad you made the leap to show us your work.
