Q: How did you get into watch collecting?

I started working at a luxury watch company. Before then, I didn’t care much for them. Only my dad knew a lot about watches. So it’s actually been really nice to be able to have a topic that my dad and I are able to talk about constantly.

Q: What was the first watch you ever owned?

When I was a kid, probably some kind of Casio G-Shock. I would always use the stopwatch feature and try to get it to stop at 1 second exactly. Now as an adult, my first watch purchase was the Orient Sun and Moon v3. It was the first watch I fell in love with, and the first one where I genuinely felt I needed it.

Q: Do you have a watch with a particularly interesting story behind it?

Not yet. But soon, my Opalin Tudor Black Bay GMT will. I plan to backpack across Europe with one of my closest friends, and I will use the traveller’s GMT function just as it was intended.

Q: What is one piece of advice you have for someone just getting into watches?

Start small, start cheap. But if something really is speaking to you, do your homework and make sure you truly know you are happy with what you are purchasing without destroying your life for it. Never compromise experiences, relationships, or opportunities with the purchase of a material item.

Q: What brands have been getting your attention lately?

Microbrands and Independents. Kari Voutilainen, Konstantin Chaykin, Farer, Christopher Ward, Wise Watches etc. I love seeing what designers are capable of without the restraint of shareholders or a committee. My dream is to become an authorised dealer for high-quality independents and microbrands. Or to resurrect an otherwise dying or forgotten brand.

Q: What is your grail watch and why?

The best watch is always the next one. The next one at the moment is the Rolex Explorer 1 (36mm). However, my be-all, end-all of watchmaking would be a Daniel Roth Tourbillon. The perfect timepiece. (or a Solar-Powered Mondaine stop2go, but that’ll never happen… right?)
