Four Funerals and a Wedding

The last three months have been just that for me and my large family, four funerals and one wedding.

All these sort of events got me thinking, that I don’t own an appropriate watch for such formal gatherings. I’m of the hopeful mindset that we all laugh more than we cry and having a sporty or fun watch on the wrist is normal and important to me.

My usual thoughts about a Dress watch were of the same outcome… “it’s wasteful and I don’t need one” for the few times a year to wear, at a corporate Christmas party and New Year’s Eve events. But…as my horological maturity develops, this thought has returned. I now feel awkward wearing certain time pieces that I own to funerals or weddings which are only become more frequent.

How about you?

•Is a dress watch a must have?

•Can a dress watch be versatile?

•Am I alone in thinking way too much about keeping the wrist quiet during said events?

I added some photos, as these are more in my favour.

Love to hear your thoughts…

Not a must have I've come to realize. Thought I needed one but I wear what I like even if it's borderline in a certain setting. Nobody else cares; so as long as I'm happy with my watch I'm good.

A dress watch can definitely be versatile. I have 3 I wear on dressy occasions but I also consider them sporty/casual (DJ41, Santos, Reverso).

Yes, it doesn't need to be quiet. You just need to enjoy it!

Edit: And above all, condolences. 4 funerals is a lot, sorry you've had to deal with that.

I find dress watches are the most versatile of all. Because of their simple design they can be worn with anything and because they're subtle you never look overdressed. The only times I wouldn't wear one is on the beach if I'm likely to get in the water, or when doing some kind of manual labour/ DIY/ gardening.

·

I don't know the answer as to whether a dress watch is an essential for you but I will say you're choices in the pics are all absolute winners. Very classy, understated & elegant.

I think a dress watch is a must have, if it’s versatile even better. If you don’t plan on using a dress watch much, I wouldn’t invest too much into one.

I’m pretty sure you’re not alone in thinking to have a quiet wrist at certain events. My go to watches to be low key is my Seiko SARB and Rolex 6694. The SARB pictured isn’t mine, but that’s how mine looks.

I am always of the belief that every collector should have at least one of the following in their arsenal:

Vintage

Dive

Field

Dress

Every day beater

Tool watch i.e pilot, GMT, chronometer etc.

Pocket

Something for every use and occasions

Sorry to hear about all your funerals. Even if they are part of life they are never a happy occasion.

I believe a dress watch has it’s place in any collection. They are just a white canvas. You put a subtle black strap on for the formel occasions and change to something with some more sparkle for other. They are surprisingly versatile. If in steel or any white metal the are totally under the radar.

If they aren’t part of your normal lifestyle there is an ocean of vintage options to a fair price.

I can subscribe to your point of you, and if your reverso is on a leather strap I’d consider it a dress watch.

Sounds like your all set.

My smart /casul /dress watch was a Cartier Tank Fancaise but I gifted it to my Mother in-law years ago. I found it was a little too shiny for me.

For me know a dress watch has to be on a leather strap and a white, silver, grey, or black dial.

Thanks for your kind sentiment.🤝

These are fine watches, and great suggestions!💯

I think dress watches are nice to have but not a must. I don't even think they're a must for funeral or weddings. Very sorry to hear about your losses and congratulations on your new family.

Here's what I like to do in these circumstances, I wear a watch that has a sentimental attachment to that person or event. For example if the person was traveler wear a GMT. If the person has a connection to the water wear a diver. If the person was a hiker or walker maybe a field watch would be appropriate. I can usually find a watch that works for the occasion. When I do this I can wear that watch later and remember that event or person. It becomes my own personal reminder and it makes me smile. I have an Explorer ll I wear that reminds me of my father everytime I put it on. Best of luck.

Don't think it's a must have, you can wear what or who you are !

Maybe must have is a little to literal.

Good point! 🤝

Hello, my friend! Dress watches are tricky if you don't dress up much, like you're saying. One thought is Orient has some beautiful dress watches to see how much you wear it before you go all in on something?? Or go with your GADA watch for dress?

Thanks Matt,

I will definitely have a look, as test driving is usually gives good feedback. Wise advice🦉

Yes, a grown man needs a dress watch. It doesn’t have to be expensive or ‘high horology’ but should be classic fit (e.g. relatively small) and simple (not skeletonized, no major complications etc). A Seiko Presage could be a good example or an Orient Bambino.

Thank you, I agree with you 💯

I am enjoying my Presage cocktail, I guess that should cover me. But as you say size and complications matter. This is mine at 39mm and open heart I’m not really feeling it as a pure dress watch.

If you know what I mean… thank you as your opinion is valued.🤝

Size is, of course, relative. The 39mm looks ok on your wrist.
