Strap Changes

Anybody else have massive anxiety about taking a bracelet off a really nice watch? I know it's just spring bars, I've changed straps on other watches...

Okay. Hear me out on this.

(Actually, first, that’s an amazing collection already. I’m impressed at the thought that’s gone into it. I don’t know how you just don’t sit and stare at them all day. Awesome.)

Consider a G-Shock. No, really.

You e covered the major mechanical complications, you’ve covered land sea and air, you’ve covered sports and dress.

The next gaps for me would be something meaningfully quartz, or meaningfully digital. Of the digital variety, it’s hard not to put classic/original G-Shock references high on this list, for what they introduced and delivered and their impact on Digital watches. I have more thoughts if that’s interesting.

As for analog quartz, there’s high end quartz, there’s Ecodrive for the novel power technology, and I’d suggest Swatch with a straight face. Again, they maintained Swiss relevance in time by creating pop art icons and a modern brand. And it’s definitely different than your current line up. 🤣

Thats how I think about it. Staying closer to home, the German brands listed above would be great adds.

Yup! Watch on my left, and have evolved from a Samsung fit band to a Fitbit and now actually an Apple Watch. The important things I want is data and interactive notifications, so I don’t use the Apple Watch to tell time. Weird? Probably. Has anybody ever said anything? Only my wife. 🤣 Not stopping anytime soon. If style and aesthetic is your thing, I think the Fitbit is the better option. Now I just have a way to give a TED talk on the juxtaposition of modern technology and mechanical wizardry.

It’s nice and different. I don’t tend to think about Squale much, mainly because I’m kind of over dive watches at the moment.

Honestly, what I like is that YOU like, can say why, and it’s filling a gap in your collection. That makes it awesome.

I’ll add Christopher Ward to the discussion. The finishing on my C63 is outstanding.

Any bias or preference for mechanical Or quartz?

I keep hearing similar arguments but I think they miss a couple of points. This might get long.

First, minor point, the Bioceramic has been used by Swatch for at least two years, it’s not new or unique to the Moonswatch.

Second, I keep seeing comparison between the Moonswatch and the SMP. What this misses is the other half of the collaboration that makes this interesting. Assuming you think of it as the “quartz crisis” instead of the “quartz revolution”, you have to acknowledge Swatch’s role in sustaining the Swiss watchmaking industry through the change. They created an inexpensive watch and built a brand around the fun designs. They’re great examples of well done pop art, not high art.

Thats what makes these pieces so interesting. It’s not a toy Speedmaster. It’s the Speedmaster design seen through the Swatch pop art lens. Bright colors, (relatively) inexpensive, quartz, fun, etc.

If you don’t hold any regard for Swatch in the first place, this isn’t likely to change your mind. If you recognize that each brand has a distinct point of view and significance, then these watches are  a really interesting blend of the two.

I’m here for it. Not because it’s a budget Speedmaster, but because it’s a fun pop  interpretation of a Speedmaster.

I mean, I’m still trying to get my hands on a MoonSwatch (Jupiter) but my AD can’t keep up with demand.

I’ll just show myself now… 🤣

Oh, that’s fantastic. I have the C63 Automatic (not the GMT) in white, currently the nicest watch I own by far (… stay tuned …) but that strap combination is fantastic. Love what CW does.

As an aside, I never quite understood the comparisons to the Rolex Explorer. I might be losing my eyesight, but the circular pip indicators on the Explorer II look nothing like the baton indices on the C63. If anything, my non-GMT C63 bears more resemblance to an Oyster Perpetual than an Explorer. This has always perplexed me.
