When is modding turning into creating a fake?

I really like the Casio G-Shock GMW-B5000-TVA1. But at 1600 euro's it is out of my range. On AliExpress I saw a mod kit that replaces the casing and bracelet of a Casio square to make it look like a TVA. I have mixed feeling about this. What do you think? Is this ok, or is this creating a fake TVA.

I guess that if the kit is Casio branded, but clearly not made by Casio then you would be creating a fake. Only you can decide as to whether that is ok or not. The great thing about about retail is that you always have a choice. Yes, or no.

So I am a little bit confused about this. The product pictures don't show any Casio or G-shock text. But when you look at the customer photos, there is clearly the G-shock label on the product.

It's your watch, noone should care.

Unless you mod a Invicta with a Rolex Logo and sell it for Rolex price. :)

Some people get too sensitive about this kind of stuff imo.

If you are not selling it as a completely original Casio, I see no issue.

Besides, as is always best with these things, follow your heart, not social validation.

very often sellers will photoshop fake branding out of the advertisments because they are well aware of the legality of importing counterfeit goods. In the case of the kit you are talking about, it is clearly counterfeit. I wouldn't risk it.

I'm right on the edge of getting a metal bracelet mod for one of my g shocks, I'd really prefer if it didn't have any "casio" branding on it. I can't attest to the quality of aftermarket parts like that, but the fancy g shocks I've handled are kinda awesome and I don't think after market parts would give it the same feel. Of course that's also because my g shock won't have the inner steel structure or screwdown back. I always say one should customize/modify their stuff as they see fit, whether it's watches, jeans, or cars.

My brand new Gshock GA-B2100C squeakes like a little mouse being stepped on, and i'm sweating underneath those resin bands. So i got no hesitation modding it. Already ordered Nato Extenders and a 22mm Nato Strap.

You would be buying counterfeit product from criminals. Only you can determine your own comfort level when dealing with criminals.

This is a point that is well-taken and can certainly prove to be a quandary for some. When I ordered the bracelet mod kit, it was an issue that, honestly, hadn’t crossed my mind. I just thought how awesome the watch would look with this mod and thought about it purely from that point of view. I modded other Casio watches (oil fills, crystal swaps, date magnifiers, bracelets and dial designs) and so when I decided to do this “mod”, I thought of it as just that… a mod.

It wasn’t until afterwards, when I received a message from the seller on AliExpress, asking not to post any pics of the product due to the Casio markings on the case that it really hit me.

But alas…

It looks awesome. 😀

Of course, I’m not trying to pass it off as an original but rather preferred the metal bracelet to the resin band, but then again, that’s not really the issue now is it?

The answer lies in the proverbial… YMMV.

I just can't feel too bad about anyone faking this watch. I mean, Casio's out here selling a f*cking digital watch for $2k, what did they expect?

As many have said, as long as you are keeping it to wear yourself and not trying to sell it to someone else as something it's not, do what makes you happy and enjoy YOUR watch. No one else notices our watches anyway.

Also, it's a G-Shock that you are making look like another G-Shock (albeit a more expensive one). I'm not sure how this is much different than modding a Seiko to look like another Seiko or a Yachtmaster, Sub, BB, Batman, Milsub or something unique.

My Seiko 5KX is wearing much different clothes than it did from the store and it's one of the reasons I love that watch (perfect for modding). That G-Shock looks cool. Maybe it's time to dress up my square.

Was considering to buy a steel or even titanium case and strap for my 5610U. I don't see this as creating a fake. More as a mod. Would not sell my watch though. And it's reversible.
