I now know why I don't like luxury watches

For over a year (and maybe longer) I've been trying to work out exactly why I don't like luxury watches, and here's the thing, it's not the ridiculous prices.

It really boils down to 2 things:

  1. I don't particularly like metal bracelets. I prefer to be comfortable, and so I wear a lot of plastic and rubber-strapped watches instead. Metal bracelets inevitably pinch my skin or hair no matter how well they are made, plus the weight of them just irritates me somehow. I'm fine with them for a few hours, but then I want them off and back in the box.

  2. There aren't many "crazy" styles to choose from with luxury watches. They all scream "old man" and "1950s" to me, and are so very, very boring. Each top brand has only a few designs which everyone goes for, and they are all very bland and conservative. I'm not a banker (except in Cockney rhyming slang) or involved in something corporate where peer group conformity matters, so I like to be a bit more of an individual. Luxury watches don't allow me to be myself.

As I said, it's certainly not about the price. I inherited enough money when my dad died to be able to buy just about any of the "big brand" watches, but I never liked any of them enough to do it. I keep trying to like them, but I really don't. Even the homage watches I bought tended to be the same old Submariner homages because that's all any of the luxury brands (and microbrands) look like to me anyway.

I'd rather wear a Swatch, a Casio, or even a fashion brand like a Daniel Wellington than anything else, because that's just me being true to myself. If I went above that in perceived levels of greatness, I simply wouldn't enjoy it.

I also don't care about what brand I wear because I'm not loyal to any of them in particular. If I like the look of a watch, I'll buy it and wear it until I'm bored with it, but I'd rather buy an interesting-looking watch than a boring one to begin with.

2 is a fair point.

I pretty much agree. Was saving money to et something nice, but instead I keep buying parts to build custom watches. More satisfying, and I end up with something just like I want.

So, to summarize, your point is that you you are young, you like what you like, luxury is not for you and metal bracelets are not comfortable. Well, maybe 50 years ago I was like you. But with time, things change, tastes change and you start liking the stuff you did not like before. Also, events happen in your life will change you and you will learn to appreciate different things. I used to hate cognac when I was young. Now it is my favorite drink. I used to want an Omega watch because of family history and something that happened to me 45 years ago, not because it is a luxury watch. But when I learned about the history of Omega brands, I started to appreciate the watch even more. So, give luxury brands a chance and learn why they became luxury, if you have not already.

Cheers!

Refreshing to see someone just liking what they like.

Weird, I find metal bracelets much more comfy than rubber or leather, because my wrist gets sweaty and irritated with those materials, while metal conducts warmth away and breathes better.

Never had a problem with pinching, except for a folded link casio calculator watch

Valid points.. there is no need to spend on luxury watches if your heart isn’t with them. Spend on what you like and if they’re not luxury brands, you’ll probably end up with huge collection. There is nothing wrong with Swatches, Casios, etc… I have a few of them.

Wow, you're 105 years old? You must really know your stuff now then and be the oldest member of this forum. 😜

I'm not sure why you tried to "summarize" my points when I only made 2 of them. LOL

To be honest, I think I probably just don't like wearing metal watches generally, not just the bracelets which I usually swap to a strap anyway. Maybe in another dimension I was forced to wear manacles or handcuffs or something. It just feels weird to me.

Also, I've noticed that a lot of people on here wear their metal bracelets way too tight.

Edited for relevance @casiodean :

I agree with point #2 to a certain degree 👍. Luxury brands have very safe and distilled designs that have been refined over decades. The designs don't do anything for me either, I find most of them boring.

I hear that Richard Mille has everything that you like. 😂

I like luxury watches but I wouldn’t buy one (again). I think they are like an expensive car. Fabulous to look and drive but a headache in most other ways. I prefer a Toyota or Honda, does 90% of an premium car and lasts for years. In the watch world that is why I am liking Casio and similar priced brands and micro brands. I am not knocking those who buy them, just my taste and wallet have changed.
