Why japanese brands are the pinacle of horology.

My reasons are:

1. Japanese digital watches like the gshock are more durable and frankly, higher quality(as in lifetime) than most brands.

2. Their automatic movements are high quality but still cheaper the swiss mades.

3. The japanese realy know how to inovate, like in the case of the spring drive technology.

Well this is my rant, please tell me your opinion so I can see with new sights.

I think it depends on your definition of pinnacle. Swiss movements are still world renowned but Japanese has learned to mass produce movements, which then lowers prices.

Most of my collection is Seiko or Casio but I would never say those movements or watches are better than the best of Swiss watchmaking, either objectively or subjectively.

Im a big fan of Japanese made and not limited to watches but I'm still in the camp of Swiss > Japanese.

🤷🏻‍♂️

Horses for courses.

I'll take a Timex over a Casio for a digital, but for a complications watch that is more art than function, Swiss or German wins.

Watches are many things to many people, it's always wise to remember that your view of watches is not universal.

Agree with your points since 9 out of my 10 watches are Japanese. But we all have a different tastes and that what makes the hobby interesting.

·

Convinced me!

Thanks for sharing your opinion 🤙❤️

I don't think one region is strictly better than the other from a technology perspective. But, in recent years, Japanese horology and microbrands like CW definitely exposed how greedy the Swiss luxury industry is with their margins and we customers are taken for a ride.

  1. Horses for courses. You’re not wearing one to a wedding though are you. It’s not an all-rounder. Military issued watches into the 2000s weren’t G-Shocks, so perhaps the hype is just that…

  2. There’s a lot to unpack there, and ETA would like a word, as would Sellita, SOPROD, Ronda, etc…

  3. Polite request: crack a book…

I mean before the japanese mainstreamed quartz, watches were only for the rich.

And also, I don't see problem wearing a Gshock to a wedding.

Again, politely, no - please do yourself a favour and read about pin-pallet movements, the Swiss Watch Statute of 1934 and how that structured the Swiss watch-making industry, how much Quartz was when it was released, how it was adopted, the so-called “Quartz Crisis” and it’s impact on the watch market and how it shaped the current industry setup, and you’ll be introduced to a whole world of affordable watches long before the introduction of electronic watches or quartz. I’m all for discussing history, but you cannot just ignore large parts to fit your narrative.

Interesting opinion on the SpeedMaster. I would be reminded of the rigorous testing NASA carried out. Beautiful watch not a delicate watch.

·

SKX013 is not a G-Shock, and you admit to putting it on a leather strap to dress it up, your point is what exactly, that you do care a little?

Issue here is a misunderstanding of watch history to drive a narrative that is incorrect and misleading.

You also seem to base the entire offerings of the Swiss watch industry on two watches you didn’t get on with, which is fine, but is not the greatest sample size, but it is yours, and that’s ok to a point. Your handle is “seikonly” so we’re pretty sure you’re not exactly coming at this from an unbiased perspective.

The pinnacle of horology is currently sat in Perth, Australia. It is a variation on the Atomic clock principle, and is accurate to plus or minus one second in 14 Billion years. Basically if someone started that clock at the moment the Lord created all, it would still be dead on. Horology is the study of Keeping time, not the study of Watchmaking. A £5K Grand Seiko Spring drive is not the pinnacle of Horology

I don't hate on watches manufactured outside of Japan, I own a few Swiss-made pieces, but horribly overpriced for what you get. You can get a very solid mechanical movement for 1/10th of what a Swiss firm would charge you...IMO you buy the brand and what you want it to say about you. No hate. I know when I wear my Omega it's saying something versus my GShocks.
