Over/Undervalued Affordables

(Photo to grab attention!)

From a FB thread, my take...

In the realm of affordables...

Most undervalued major brand would be Citizen

Most undervalued micro would be Second Hour. I don't know of a single micro with the quality and originality they are producing. With the AUD vs USD, they are a steal.

Most overvalued, although not a major brand, would be San Martin. Spotty QC and crappy CS does not make for a good value proposition.

Most overvalued major brand, Timex. Their prices at release are too high for what they offer.

Most overvalued micro is Monta. And that is now owning one that I do love. They are on par with CW for finishing but tack on another $300-500 more than they are worth. Great buys at pre-owned prices though.

Fight me!!

Strong opinions there and no objections. Never heard of Second Hour and will have to check them out as well as Monta pre-owned.

·

Which CW are you comparing to Monta?

Thanks!

I "second" this statement

San Martin is, for better or worse, revolutionary imo. They put out phenomenal pieces for pennies on the dollar of their competitors. They consistently make me rethink overpaying for major brand watches.

I see what you’re getting at, but I don’t think SM is it.

Have owned at least a half dozen CWs. All of them. 😂

Hardly revolutionary. Rep factories going legit.

Why do you believe Citizen is undervalued?

Maybe so, but that’s historically been the evolution of the watch industry - from American factories nearly putting the Swiss out of business 100+ years ago (leading to the founding of IWC by an American) to the Japanese seizing the quartz opportunity, there’s always someone pushing down the cost / quality curve.

Personally, I hope that the tide of impoved quality in Chinese watches raises all boats as basic mechanical watches become more accessible and that they serve as an entry point into this great art / hobby.

No challenge from me, as it seems your opinions are based on actual experience 🤙❤️

Look at what they offer and for less than Seiko. Citizen is under appreciated. Example: the NY0040 is in every way a better dive watch vs SKX, and for less $. But fanbois rage on about the SKX.

Second Hour... no one speaks about them. They look great and have decent spec's - all at a solid price. The Gin Clear in the light blue dial really speaks to me as well as the 12/4/8 indices.

Nice #citizen and #monta

More under appreciated I think

I agree with you

Who are we to argue. But thank you for helping to spread the word. We're pushing very hard on the finishing and build quality so it is really nice to get recognised
