TAG HEUER Vintage Monaco Automatic 39mm Mens Watch

Hello Watch Friends

Well today I have something very special to show you HANDS ON with the Vintage Monaco Automatic 39mm Men’s Watch. Oh, I can hear the boo and hisses already ha-ha! But please read on.

Anyway, it’s a thrill for me as I have always LOVED this watch, it has nothing to do with the origins of it, it isn’t the link to Steve McQueen, I was too young to know he was wearing it in films and that he was cool, and I haven’t seen those films. It's nothing to do with F1 racing as I don't really watch it unless there's going to be a down to the wire race for the championship.

I LOVE this watch basically for how it looks, the blue and white with the hint of red, the square case and how each time I go to a Jewellery/Watch shop, I get drawn to the Monaco every time, “Ben you have seen this watch a thousand times, you have pictures on your phone, in magazines, in scrap books, you have tried it on and drooled on it, it hasn’t changed since you last saw it, it’s the same watch you looked at last week and the week before that!” Yet I keep looking at it!

This one is my friend Roger’s; he’s allowed me to photo it and once again I’m drooling over it. I know these watches get an absolute battering from some people, I know these watches are very popular with others, the fact that when I’m out and about I don’t see many puzzles me, they were/are a very good seller. So why don’t I see them, they are very easy to spot due to the dial colour, case presence and style, and yet they are scarcer than Hen’s Teeth!

One day I will own this watch. Maybe for my 50th. Watch this space!

Thank you, Ben.

Check out my YouTube channel @benn0723google New *Shorts whenever I get hold of a new watch. 💯

Can't say it's entirely my design language, but in a world overcrowded with round, vaguely diver-like looking watches I'm very happy pieces like this are still alive and kicking. Just make your friend Roger an offer he can't refuse and become a proud Monaco owner 👍

That’s certainly a design classic, and yeah maybe it’s only getting stick from some quarters because it isn’t a Daytona, Speedmaster or Carrera. Surely this design can be enjoyed and appreciated on its own merits.

I think I prefer it over the Daytona 😬

Thx for the post about the Monaco, your deep love for the watch is genuinely affecting, you might even sell a few more watches for the company. I only became aware of the icon sometime in the 1980s since I have never been a F1 fan and probably saw more Steve McQueen performances on B&W television as a bounty hunter in the old west than his massively popular Hollywood films. The man has been filmed in a few terrific vehicular cinematic scenes that come to mind. The last time that I spotted a Monaco was on the wrist of a very large sales professional working the Breitling counter at a multi brand shop, before that on guys who collected the vintage Monaco watches from when they were first launched circa 1970s, a design that was probably too fashion forward. I personally have always been a fan but I am still catching up to watches on my own wish lists. Good luck sourcing your Monaco!

definitely on my list of watches, just love it!

That's one of the most iconic watches IMO. If I had unlimited watch funds, I'd definitely have it in my collection.

one day my friend

Tbh my friend. I've been obsessed with the Monaco to lately lol! I want one so badly!!! I don't have one around I can look at and actually hold like you though. I've never even seen one in real life! Yet I'm dying for 1. So know that someone else at this very moment is also obsessing over that amazing watch. YOU ARE NOT ALONE MY FRIEND! What's more interesting is that because I don't have a lot of money I buy homage watches a lot. It doesn't bother me at all. But with this... I just can't!! I've found a couple faithful well built ones but I just can't do it with this watch. WHY? If I can't have the real deal then I guess I'm doomed to look at pictures of it forever cuz I just can't buy an omage this time. Weird. Guess that's true love hahaha 🤣.

Nice write up! Unfortunately, I just discovered there's no puke emoji on here...

😜

Whilst I can appreciate the Monaco as an historical, technical milestone, plus Terrence McQueen liked it..

For me, these things are so fricking large (55mm diagonal), and thick (15mm+), you need wrists like The Rock to pull one off properly.. (and even then, I'd be worried about hurting someone with it). Definitely one to admire from afar in my opinion..

I agree, I could never buy a homage or a fake of the watch I truly want, it wouldn't sit right with me, I would look at it and think, it isn't real, it isn't THE ONE! I need to scratch the itch and the itch needs to stop! 🤣

I found it wore larger than the 39mm it suggests, but I've had a Planet Ocean that was 45.5mm and that was ok too, ask @Max for the puke emoji 😂

Oh yes!! Yes it does lmao 🤣🤣!!

Love this one too, really special to me since Steve McQueen in LeMans in the 70’s. It’s on my list, doesn’t mean I’ll own one but it’s definitely on my list.

·

Damn that Monaco is so beautiful, and always will be with its iconic shape and design. Hopefully you'll get it soon

·
