My HMT Jhalak

HMT ( Hindustan Machining Tools) is an Indian watch company started by the government after establishing freedom from the British.

The watch ticked on lots of Indians hands for decades untill morden watch companies showed up like Titan so slowly HMT with their lack of marketing and less innovation in watches lost their grip in watch world.

In 2016 the government officially closed HMT watches However, the a very small but super enthusiastic group of collectors kept HMT watches alive even after the company being closed.

HMT watches still sells some automatic and some quarts watches online and via their shop in Manglore, India.

We all are hoping that HMT gets revived back but that's a nearly impossible.

Here are some photos of one of the HMT i own.

My small collection. Got them off Ebay some years ago, when I first heard about the brand, for around 10€ each.

Interesting watch! I didn’t know about hmt!

You can get these watches surprising cheap. And some of the aftermarket dial colours are just wonderful, these watches are small so even if the colour is bright it doesn't stick out like a sore thumb 👍🏼

Great write-up; your pictures are also excellent! I've been wanting to get an HMT for a while, but shipping and taxes have never been on my side. The orange and maroon dial Stellar models are my favorite.

I love that they're affordable, feature decent movements and come with some history to the name.

Thank you so much 🙏🏻😊

I love the new stellar automatic. It got a miyota movement in it and it's a hacking watch i believe. Also the dials look good on some of them. I think it goes for ₹8000 ( INR ) on their official website

They are doing some excellent things with dials, especially at their price.

I am really interested in HMT! I like brands from all around the world that focus on serving everyday people. Unfortunately as a Westerner I can't pick a model just based on my name 😅

Haha, go with a janta with a devnagari dial. It uses indian Sanskrit language numbers. There are no originals now but you can find on aftermarket models on ebay quite easily

Looks something like this

I really like the Sanskrit, it's on my wishlist, probably in a coloured dial. I could easily end up with half a dozen, once I've got one it's a slippery slope!

·

I would like to find one, but it seems many of the ones on ebay are franken-watches. Anyone know of a reliable source for original ones?

Since the company isn't making handwond watches anymore so most of the watches are franken. You might be able to find original on some Facebook groups but also ask for original box.bill and box

On the other hand, the company is still making automatic watches with miyota movements in their new stellar watch and they also have some quartz watches on their official website

I understand what you are going thru, i got the devnagari one in the picture to gift someone. 😛😛

I've seen these and they have some really gorgeous dials.

I love HMT, have two that are currently busted but sending to a friend in watchmaking school to fix them back up. I’ve got a Pilot with a really cool blue and chrome dial and a vintage Chethan from the early 70s that just has a fantastic design
