I got my first mechanical watch in 1981 - first grade at primary school. Basic Ruhla, nothing to get crazy about, but this ticking sound and a sweep of a seconds hand. Mesmerizing.
Q: What was the first watch you ever owned?
Ruhla
Q: Do you have a watch with a particularly interesting story behind it?
I have few watches, still working on interesting stories.
Q: What is one piece of advice you have for someone just getting into watches?
few actually (I’m an old fart, we always have too much to say ;) )
- never ever borrow money to buy a watch
- there is no such thing as an alternative watch. buy what you like for what it is.
- watches have different sizes for a good reason
- vintage ain’t cheap
- buy what you like, like what you buy
Q: What brands have been getting your attention lately?
Omega - always
Longines - pretty much as long as Omega
Tudor - for at least 2 years
Grand Seiko - we’re still working this out…
Q: What is your grail watch and why?
Don’t have one, there are few that I like, my grail would have to be the combination of few modern watches.
- Omega Seamaster 1948 LE for the presence
- JLC Ultra Thin - movement
- Tudor Ranger 39mm - proportions + simplicity is the ultimate sophistication
- Grand Seiko - dial
