Macy's Bulova

I know this is practically an unknown concept on the Crunch, but I've recently sold some of my watches that have not been getting a great deal of wrist time. Some of you will be familiar with a couple of them.. the white Casio MRW-200 which really was a lovely little watch. My grey G-Shock GBD200 otherwise known as the Stormtrooper to my friends. And a Pagani Ranger homage that I bought on an AliExpress sale, but never wore. Sad as it was to see some pieces go, the Upshot was, I had some money to spend on another watch.

After that long intro, let me introduce the BULOVA MILITARY REISSUE of MIL-W-3818A From 1962

Image

The keen eyed among you may notice this is not the normal automatic model but a quartz version. That's right, quartz. Bulova didn't just make the 3 automatic variants of their Hack watch, but they also made this lesser known quartz model in limited numbers for Macy's Department Store in America back around 2018.

Image

These watches were sold exclusively by Macy's until someone bought up 100 in a NOS sale (or so I'm told). 20 of these watches ended up in the hands of a seller in the UK and I managed to get one before they were all snatched up.

Image

Included in the sale were 3 additional NATO straps as well as the lovely Bulova strap made from soft leather.

There doesn't seem to be much information on the internet about these quartz models, and if anyone can shed any light on what I've bought, it would be appreciated.

I know the watch is based on a military spec watch from 1962 , albeit in a larger 38mm case, and they were manufactured in small numbers around 2018 and sold exclusively by Macy's Department store, but other than that.. Nada.

I don't know the movement, what battery it takes or even if the model numbers on the case can help me identify anything.

So don't be shy (especially my American friends), step up and tell me everything you know.

You can still buy this watch on Amazon.com (USA), in both the quartz (model 96A219) and automatic (model 96A259, Miyota 8S20-43A engine) flavors. Great looking watches!

Unfortunately, I have a field watch on the way right now...

Thanks Eric, Amazon (USA( are obviously better stocked than here in the UK. Fortunately I didn't pay Amazon's asking price. Enjoy your new Field when it arrives 🤓

Thanks to Lawrence @NewbombTurk for suggesting it might be a miyota quartz as Citizen is the parent company of both

Can't offer anymore info, but congrats on the new watch, John.

Hey John,

Congrats on the new watch, glad to see this Bulova Hack variant getting some love. It definitely flies under the radar vs its automatic siblings.

Funnily, I’m actually wearing this exact piece in the office today.

Like you, I’m not sure what battery this takes so saving this thread in case someone knows haha. Or I guess we’ll find out in a few years when we need to crack open the back to replace our batteries XD.

That's just my best guess, John. I guess you'll have to wait until you change the battery to find out. I couldn't find out any more information either after talking with you. It must be a riddle wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma. 😂 Congrats on the new watch, my friend! Enjoy!

Thanks, Lawrence. I guess I don't need to worry about the battery yet. But you know how curious I get.

I guess, your just starting your day over there. Hope you're shift isn't too windy tonight 🤓

Thanks, John. A little bit of wind would be welcomed to help move this disgusting fog out.

Thanks, Kostas. The field trip to warmer climes is actually happening sooner than expected. I'm flying out to Spain next week to help a friend when she comes out of hospital.

And that you will manage to reserve some time for yourself while in Spain!
