I don't really remember "getting into watches" since I have always had a watch from my youngest years. My parents gave me a Timex to teach me how to tell time when I was very young. I do remember finding what I think was a Universal Geneve Compax chronograph in a drawer and I was fascinated by the stop watch part.
Q: What was the first watch you ever owned?
A "youth" Timex circa 1960s.
Q: Do you have a watch with a particularly interesting story behind it?
My first "big boy" watch. In 1972 I was on a college study trip in Hong Kong. My parents were there on a separate trip. They knew that I wanted to get a nice camera and we were at the camera shop that was recommended by relatives that lived there. This shop also had watches and jewelry. My mother knew I wanted a new watch and gave me the choice and I picked a Seiko automatic chronograph, 6138-0020, which I still own.
Q: What is one piece of advice you have for someone just getting into watches?
Don't pay attention to the hype, buy whatever gives you joy.
Q: What brands have been getting your attention lately?
A. Lange & Sohn. Grand Seiko. JLC. Cartier. Tissot. Furlan Mari. Longines. Nomos.
Q: What is your grail watch and why?
Rolex Cellini. I have always liked the simplicity of the design.
