I bought a fossil from the 70s - Avia chronograph

In my vintage collection from the 50s and the 60s I have focused on the beautiful design of dress pieces from that era. I have with my Omega Seamaster Cosmic 2000 and the Certina DS2 dipped my toes into vintage from 70s. This time I want to explore the playful case shapes from that era. When I saw this Avia chronograph I knew that this was my next watch.

I was drawn to the blue dial and the, sort of, cushion case. Very wearable size of 37mm and equipped with a Landeron248 movement.

Avia watches is one these numerous pre quartz watch companies with a good reputation but didn’t suceeded in the long run. It has it’s roots from late 1890. It was a registered brand by HV Degoumois. Over the years it produced well perceived watches and also delivered movements to other companies like Wittnauer and Ball. The brand had a shortlived success with a quartz movement with a LCD as part of a consortium. In later years the Avia brand was a part of Fossil group. I don’t know if Fossil still selling watches branded Avia.

So let’s see what happens tomorrow. Will it be a 1 WC Day 20 for the C63 or a Day 1 for the Avia?

That’s a sweet looking watch!  Last Avias I saw were these…

That is a handsome watch.  That case style will never be the most elegant, but it wears so comfortably.

Haha, elegant definetely not. Rather a charming representative of it’s time.

Interesting! There are so many watch brands I have not heard of and this is one of them. It is also a strange coincidence that you titled your post fossil from the '70a, Avia was purchased by Fossil, and I was just looking at a Fossil '70s style retro digital watch for my digital collection. 😀

I saw the later Fossil connection when I did some research before the purchase. So I used it in the headline. I don’t have the history of the Fossil-brand. Your digital prospect looks really nice.

I tend to think of Fossil as one of the first brands that capitalized on more modern marketing strategies later employed by Vincero, MVMT, and others, but producing better watches with more original designs.

Well, I did not do the 1WC, but I am always down for a watch change! Since we are doing the '70s, here is my brown lump.

Congrats @WatchYourIntruder 🙌!

Great looking piece. It's really about having fun. In the Vintage World, when a watch speaks to you you have to go for it. Or else, you will never see that exact watch ever again. You did great on pulling the trigger my Bro👌.

The same cannot be said about modern pieces. That is why I can never come around to buying a new watch.

Thanks! I agree, new watches come in constant new releases. It is hard to decide which you like best or what new versions that might pop up in near future. This Avia is the result of the search of a blue, C shaped Heuer Carrera 73653. But I found that they have become too expensive for my wallet.
