The most hated luxury watch on the planet?

So... After 2 years of watch collecting I've come to a realization. EVERYONE HATES ON HUBLOT! From your normal collectors, many who've never even owned one to serious luxury collectors and YouTubers. Bloggers, brothers, mother's, father's and guys named Roger! They all hate on Hublot. I've never owned one, hell I've never even held one, so to avoid sounding like an ignorant hater who's hating out of sheer popularity, I'm going to reserve judgement. But what I am gonna do is come to you! My trusted fellow crunchers. I want to know why they're so hated. No speculation, or "I'm guessing" answers please. I want straight honest and true felt opinions on why a watch brand can be so hated on!! On why you don't like them or why you do like them.

SOUND GOOD 👍.... Then awayyyyy we go!

Many threads on it. It is the Nico effect, but we can and should ignore his rants. Historically, they made $1000 watches with basic movements with $8000 stickers and that is the rub for most. Some were over sized and they focused on football and many folks were simply turned off.

Nowadays they can start to justify their prices and they make some nice looking watches. As long as the screws remain askew, they are not for me.

Price. +\- 10k for a 1k Selitta movement. Can’t even align the screws for that money. If they cost around 2k there would be a lot less hate I think.

Short answer is that almost nobody else does that.

Also, they are a fairly young brand and the middlebrow needs archaism as they need their lack of personal taste supplanted by mimicking the taste that the respectable had a generation or two or three back.

Some people will say "oh no, bad value because movements were not-in house and could be had cheaper." This is not a brand for bargain hunters!

Pretty much just watching anything the plastic paddy puts out & you’ll have your answer.

In short, ugly, tacky trash with borrowed movements. Not that borrowed movements has ever stopped other manufacturers from doing well. They’re also disproportionally expensive for what they sell.

I was thinking that to. Tbh I can't stand the guy. But can all that hate really come downtown just one dudes rants? Does he really hold that much influence in the watch community? I know he's popular (God knows why) but man that's some serious sway power if it is true!

Interesting take. Thank you.

I hear that a lot. After I let this post marinade for a few days I'm going to do a follow up. After I do some research myself into the actual brand and it's product. Thanks for replying.

Funny! True to. I actually harbor no hate for the brand as I have no reason to but I wanted to know why so many do.

Agreed...and that's the whole point. If you don't research the why's and the how's of our negative traits as humans then we will never learn how to grow out of them. You must know to grow. But I understand.

Sadly, during COVID he gained a massive audience. He’s an entertainer and needs click. Easy target.

There was a time when products lived or died by the quality of their works.. unfortunately now a company can stand or fall because of the blustering of blowhards. Thanks social media.

People hate Hublot because it's fashionable to be seen hating Hublot.

It's a signal to other watch people that you're on the right team, and think like they do. It's "God Tier" silliness in reverse.

Lol.

I'm not on their team, but I'm also not on A-Langy, JLC, R-Milley, Nomos, and many other teams. Not my thing. If it is you, go for it, have fun proudly rock it.

For my $, I have and will own multiple micros that I like, and maybe a Tudor Rolex case Sub. Who am I kidding it'll just be more micros... 😂

It's not different than the reverse humble brag anti-luxury brand crowd.

Or the watches are just fancy trinkets and not necessary anymore more crowd....followed shortly on the Instas by OMG I just put a hairline scratch on the clasp while washing my hands with a 5000m WR watch. Is it gonna be ok, and will it leak?

Honestly... It's a tool for me. A way to understand people better and there in understand myself better. The knowledge I gain makes me a better person, friend, father.. ect. I like learning about our human condition. I think it's very important if we are to ever advance past our more baser instincts.

I hate that I can't pronounce it...I say "U-Blow"

It's not just me, my 10 year old daughter was watching the women's World Cup and said "What is a "HUB-LOT" as I lay on the ground dying from laughter.

Clearly there are reasons to like or dislike a brand that have nothing to do with being "cool", but it's pretty obvious that it is considered "cool" to hate Hublot.

It happens in every hobby/interest, and could easily have been any other brand that's a bit different from the mainstream.

I remember 10 years ago in the firearms world it was "cool" to hate the Savage Axis, despite it not being any worse or better than other entry level rifles.

Personally I don’t get the hate either. Just because something is overpriced doesn’t make it a bad product. Just overpriced. There are tons of watches I like yet don’t agree with the pricing. Doesn’t mean I hate them.

I think that’s a poor justification and as some have said, it’s more a case of conforming to the popular takes on watches and watch brands. e.g. all the love Black Bays get. They aren’t THAT great in my opinion but it’s herd mentality to a degree.

Seiko... I like Seiko. But I feel that for the specs you get they're overpriced.I still own 3 of them! And I'm not running around screaming hate for them. I believe that ALL watch brands have their negatives and positives. Like all things do. I guess my goal here was to find out why HUBLOT gets sooooooo much more than anyone else. At least it seems that way to me. Man I typed in HUBLOT in the search tab on YouTube and oh my!!! Eeesh. I actually feel bad for them.

·

I have no use for Hublot. I don’t care for their design language or their pricing strategy. I’m kind of meh towards the brand.

I think the hate comes from the brand perception, as if they are marketing Hublot as a luxury brand in the price range and market position alongside Zenith, IWC, GS, JLC and others while they are clearly not their equal.

·

I have pretty fond memories of the classic from the 1980s, overpriced but they were just hip( I try to avoid using the term”cool” out of respect for Marshal McLuhan). first to use rubber straps. I think the first serious brand to mix materials. Nobody here wanted the Big Bang? I have never owned one but have handled my share. I believe a lot of people hate Hublot for right and wrong reasons: it is a pretty minimal watch but also fashionable to mock the watch. Just my opinion.

Haha. Yeah it gets like that. I guess people didn’t like the marketing which basically said this watch is for the rich and flashy. That never sits well with common folk.

Ohhh... Yeah that's a horrible strategy in my opinion. I mean even common folks like me will by our Grail or an expensive watch at least once or twice in our lives. Over time that's millions of watches! Really bad long term sales strategy man! If you want some of that commoners money... Offending them and basically saying YOUR UNWORTHY is NOT how to get it lol!

·

I like Hublot. If I had Hublot money, I'd buy one

I think the reason people hate them is they actively marketed to the newly rich on social media and priced their watches well above what a similar watch would be in the market. The argument is if you can get the same material and style for $3,000 why on earth would you pay $30,000? Well, people did

·

I've never had an opinion on Hublot,so when I saw one of their boutiques I went in.Tried a few on and really liked them,I liked the case size skeleton face rubber strap.i don't watch YT vids so wasn't influenced by reviews.would I get one Yes

Most people just hate the poor value for money or do it because all the "cool" kids are doing it. I think value is for nerds, and following the crowd for sheep. I don't like their massive case sizes, but many of their designs are actually quite attractive to me.
