As a Twitter user old enough to recall when they had no poll feature, I'm on the fence here.
Polls are great for collecting data. Polls are not so great for community building & post engagement, IMO.
When asking a question w/o using a poll, you get replies with reasoning and stories; enriching content. When asking the question with a poll, you get cold hard data & that's kind of it.
When answering a question that's not a poll, you're accountable for your answer. When answering a question using a poll, clicking your answer feels like the end of what was requested, so you don't share the story or the details that you would have minus the poll.

I've never considered this, but I think you might be right. Data vs engagement... It'll be interesting to see where things land on WC, which I have found generally so far to be an engaging platform.

There is certainly the worry about quashing discussion which we are aware of, and would obviously want to avoid. But there are topics that just become more informative for all including the OP with a poll.
My suggestion is to write the poll just like a normal post so people can see your question from the outset, thus are more likely to respond in kind.
I'm any case, we are trying stuff and seeing what works. The platform is constantly tweaking to give the community a better experience.
If you have any feedback or suggestions on how a feature is implemented, let us know, we read everything 😉

I agree that this is definitely a potential issue, as I've noticed the same thing myself on other platforms. Even so, I feel that having the option to use a poll is a great thing.
In order to provide results that are anything close to meaningful, the poll question must be posed correctly, and the options provided must be properly defined. I've seen way too many polls where either the way that question is worded, or the range of options provided, simply does not allow for providing a reasonable answer.

They have their place, but get misused so often

Love WC, keep trying things!
It is something I've thought about quite a bit from when Twitter implemented it; it's definitely not an instant thought/reaction.
