Plans On Paper

So I've said I want to make my own watch box and I've also said I want to find a great old chest or box to repurpose & refurbish as a watchbox.

Well, still want to do both but I have to pick one to start on & seeing as how I haven't found the right old chest or box, I might as well start designing the 'from scratch' option.

Not sold on the angle of the watch slots box (currently 30 degrees, maybe 15 instead?) or the 3 drawers vs. only 2 drawers.

Thoughts & opinions welcome.

In regards to the display glass door angle: do you have something to keep the watches from rolling down/sagging to the bottom? Otherwise, I might just keep it flat. If you thought of custom sized cushions, then disregard.

This is kind of why I'm not sold on the angle.

The angled top is to prevent the top from being a shelf for other stuff (any flat spot tends to become a resting place for stuff at my house).

I am planning on the divider slats being perpendicular to that angle, so essentially a normal watch box just tilted up 30 degrees. I guess I can tilt the current box & see what happens.

You could have the watch cushions flat but staggered like stair steps under glass that is at an angle. That stuff doesn't roll around and you still have your angle so you don't stack stuff on it. Something like a spice rack under angled glass.

I like where you are going. I am curious about your drawer configuration.  All watches? Straps, tools, EDC?

I like the angled idea and I think you can make it work without actually making the display inside angled per se. Or keep it angled with a removable insert to hide stuff underneath?

Have you ever seen the Deferich's boxes? May be able to steal some inspiration. I had him build me a custom one when I realized I did not have the time to build my own. I still hope to, perhaps this year, but it is a good starting off point if you need ideas.

That's an interesting idea...

I'll ponder it

I haven't really settled on exactly what will go in the drawers.

The bottom might be 1/3 to 1/2 EDC (wallet, knife), & the remainder will be tools.

The top two (or one) will be for straps.

Might even do a slide panel in the back where tools could go. I think if I went that way it would just be 2 drawers, but retain the 30 degree angle.

This gave me some previously unthought of ideas. I think I'll lay out some EDC & see how much I could potentially fit in one drawer.

Thanks!

Cannot wait to see the progress.

I'm looking forward to seeing this develop. I'm envious of people with the skills for this kind of thing 👏

Kudos on the DIY project!  I like the idea of angling slightly to better see from the front.

I use and love a cheap Etsy “angled piece of wood” display system.  Owing to my tiny wrists, watch pillows rarely fit my watches. A slightly angled wooden bar accepts all straps/bracelets, and all watch sizes, brilliantly.

watches So easy to access it’s fun to swap twice a day , and watches look better not hidden behind reflecty glass IMO

It doesn’t really fit with the current design, but you could consider adding it somewhere? 👍

Rose wood wall display with the door framed like a picture. Velvet backing with velvet cushions. LED strip button lights on the back side of the door sides. Small ebony wood shelves inside to hold the cushions. You could gold leaf the facing of the little shelves or just use gold paint.

LOL. real easy to spend other people's money, huh?

He's building it and materials are not that expensive. A custom build would be very expensive to have made but his time is free. Buy a picture frame to route out the glass lands and stain it to look like rosewood. Simple frame and exotic woods are not expensive in small quantities. I built one for a Z scale train a few years back.

I'M building it and feel to suggest a completely different design after all the work and design efforts already put in to the posted drawing; well, it's kind of disrespectful.

That is a neat idea, and if I only had 6 watches and didn't need some additional storage, that would be one worth considering.

No disrespect intended there. I planned an entire boat on paper and altered it as good suggestions arose. It only resembles the original plans now and i'm an experienced builder. You had one question mark in your post as if you were looking for suggestions.

Not sure anyone who has spent time thinking about a project and committing it to paper takes a wholesale design change as a "suggestion".

Proposing a complete change is more of a "Your idea is crap and why haven't you take my ideas I've never expressed and do that option instead?"

I'm late to this party -

Awesome design!

Question... What is going to be in the triangular area under the angled watch surface? Storage accessible from behind the cabinet? Hidden spot for boxes, manuals, etc?

·

It will likely end up as storage, yes
