Deja Vu

Two phenomena exist on our forum and there's nothing we can do about either. One of them even helps create or sustain the other.

  1. Search sucks. We all know it. We complain about it.

  2. New users join all the time and ask questions or post discussions that have been asked or discussed many times previously.

Because search sucks, we can't REALLY expect the new users to try searching for the topic before they post, right?

And new users to a forum are going to ask the same questions & re-start the same discussions because THAT'S WHAT NEW USERS DO. In forum after forum from the beginning of time, new users have asked the same questions & started the same discussions the old guard has asked, answered & discussed previously.

No amount of "This is the xth time this month!" comments are going to change that.

If you don't want to answer the question again, scroll past. If you don't want to participate in the millionth MoonSwatch thread, just scroll past. You aren't required to read or reply to every single post on the Crunch. Cut the newbies some slack & remember, you were new here and on other forums once also.

If you are a newbie and get one of those "Not another post about <topic>!" comments on one of your posts, just let it roll off your back. You keep your enthusiasm. Just realize that the commenter may just be having a bad day & has temporarily forgotten how forums work.

Because we are getting new users all the time and not everyone (even the old guard) has seen every post, a new post about an old topic may be the first time a new user has experienced it.

Just relax, have fun and most important: Be Kind.

I have been told, “In a world where you can be anything, be kind” (I need to work on that myself also).

Cheers brother 🍻

I need to work on it myself. I am guilty of both behaviors on this post. It's a reminder for me just as much as it's a plea to others.

And cheers to you as well!

I don't mind it. It means I can answer those questions and make it sound like I know what I'm talking about! Like, "Oh, maybe I'm not so dumb."

And there is the best thought process here. Kudos!

Thoughtful post Todd 👌

I agree, and always try to be respectful, call me out if I’m not.

Wonder if some page could be created with pinned posts, or search improvements made, so the issue is addressed at source ?

So true. How soon we forget when we were new users.

Thank you for the reminder to be kinder 😇😀😎

Oddly enough, the repeated topics don't bug me, at least the ones looking for advice or information or whatever. I'm not sure what the attraction is of posting a poll about which of four luxury divers they should buy, by they are inoffensive.

The ones that try to stir sh*t up for clicks around the same four topics? Those are a waste of space.

Improved search might help, but it will never completely fix the issue because some users just don't use it. It's just a universal truth of forums that topics are going to be repeated. It's just something the old guard have to accept.
