What controversial take do you have regarding watches, the industry, community etc?

I'll start:

Whilst I'm glad we aren't seeing only 45mm watches and above and I do prefer smaller watches, the whole "vintage proportions" obsession feels slightly over hyped and a trend that's going on way too long

Sure it's great to see small watches, but it feels like every brand nowadays, especially micro brands, are scared to release a watch above 40mm (I've seen so many ads for 39mm divers it's insane) and every time a larger watch is produced the entire community complains and bullies the brand into making a smaller size instead. I'm not saying to stop making smaller watches, but we should have both, not be swinging from one extreme to the other

(Also we need more strap brands making odd number width straps, not less watch brands making odd lug widths)

I don't like microbrands, feels like a cash grab ...

Hate date complications...

Dislike homages unless made by the original manufacturer ...

39mm is too small for a diver.....

I could go on....😂

Bully watch brands? Like stuff them into lockers?

Yep. I make Hans Wilsdorf give me his lunch money.

For me it's some people's obsession with ISO 6425 or whatever. I am a diver and it's effectiveness pretty exaggerated.

Similarly, I like a no date but many people are oddly dismissive of something being a "tool watch" if it has a date.

  1. Tool watches look terrible with a suit.

  2. You should never wear any watch with a tux to a formal event.

Ye personally a tool watch is made more tool ish by having a date, not less, and I'm happy with or without a date

I see why it goes against traditional etiquette, tho personally I'm not bothered, and I don't think most people put much thought into it

Personally I am not a watch collector, but an enthusiast. Some take the collecting thing too far and spend loads of money on watches when they really dont need to. I have 6 watches (not inclhding a smart watch and a gift), and personally I reckon my collection is one watch too big (I don't need a work/gada and a daily imo, though I do enjoy having both)

·

As a seiko lover I still have to say Seiko gets away homages. 🫢

·

The suggestion that any watch is 'better' than any other is complete BS. The 'value' of any watch is in the eye of it's owner. It's in the back story.

Homages are fine.

Rolexes as are mostly meh!

All brands were microbrands once.

'Smart' watches are stoooooopid watches.

You're not a collector but you have a collection...........

The difference between accuracy and precision! :-)

Hand made movements are often massively, massively overrated.

Base Lange, Patek etc models really have nothing going for them as far as innovation goes. Their higher end stuff where art meets mechanical engineering is amazing, though.

A collector is someone who actively collects. I simply own a collection, and don't really intend to purchase another watch for several years. I have a collection of various cutlery I've acquired over the years, but I'm certainly not a cutlery collectors 😅

Also if someone has a one watch collection, is he a collector? A collector is someone who actively collects something. Someone who inherits a collection isn't a collector

Though of course everyone has their own definitions for this type of thing there aren't any set definitions hence why I'm personally not a collector, you might have way more watches than me and also not be, or way less and be a collector.

Keep telling yourself that! 😉

I am indeed a collector, wish I wasn't but it's in my blood. A one watch collection isn't a collection. It's a watch.

I'm inclined to agree regarding people with one watch. But yeah, I own more shirts than I do watches, and since I'm not interested in collecting either, I'm personally a collector of neither. This type of stuff is personal, so there isn't a wrong answer, it's people's relationship with their passion
