Advice Needed: Rolex Datejust 41 too good to be true?

Having been on the AD register of interest (UK) for around 9 months with no call in sight, I recently decided to test the water with some local pre-owned watch dealers for a Datejust 41.

I got lucky with one having the exact spec I want. I’ve seen it in person and it’s looks in great condition, box/papers too. My only concern is it’s available for £7,500 (after a brief negotiation). Now, I’ve been keeping a close eye on DJ41s and the average was around £9k, but has recently dropped to £8.25-£8.5k but never below £8k.

Based on the research I’ve done, the dealer seems to have a good reputation and I haven’t found any red flags.

Should I be concerned or am I being overly cautious?

Does the papers match the watch ? Was the watch recently serviced and does it have any records?

Have you checked the serial number on the watch matches the paperwork ,can be found between the lugs at 6 o'clock,I managed to get a good discount from a non AD who I trust,so perhaps prices are coming down, also you could get it serviced by an AD then you will definitely know

I am going back tomorrow (Sat) so will check the papers properly. It’s a 2020 model so presume it hasn’t been serviced.

Also, the dealer has had it serviced since it got it in a part exchange deal just before Christmas

Some good advice already and, while a drop in price from the average is something to always be wary of (and I applaud you for that; this isn't a small amount!), the flipside of the coin is: some people price stuff above and beyond what the market will pay, and some people price stuff at an amount that will sell.

I see this all the time with a certain series of books I deal on eBay sometimes. I start the listings around $125 while you can see other 'buy it now' listings at 300, 400, even 500 apiece. So if people were to look at those listings, they might conclude that was the market rate for the books. But there's a big difference between a listing at a price no one will pay, and listing at a price that will actually sell in the real world.

Like I say, just the other side of the coin.

Thank you for all the advice so far, it’s been a huge help 🙏

Not sure if this helps, but I’ve been tracking prices on a few DJs and they are dropping like a stone.
I received this email only 2 days ago. £2.25k drop just like that! So it’s entirely possible this dealer is just looking to get rid of some stock and get the cash flow up before it collapses anyway.

Thanks! That's the conclusion I’m coming to. Plus he does stock a lot of Rolex SS sports models (which are more in line with pre-owned average prices) so as this was a part exchange perhaps he‘s pricing it to sell quickly to buy his more popular models.

p.s. the mint green DJ is a lovely looking watch!

Yeah that seems fair. If he sees potential in the watch you’re trading in it makes sense for him to close the deal as well.
I’d rather sell to someone today than hope for a couple hundred extra tomorrow!

Got it! Thank you for all the helpful comments, much appreciated 🙏
