Seiko × Ghibli Ghibli collab: SPB437 Seiko Presage Nausicaä watch.

Seems like there's a new watch for Ghibli enthusiast, the new Nausicaä Presage. Blue enamel dial, 6R51 movement.

Nice.

Love the movie and Ghibli in general. But I'm not sure about this dial, I do like the artwork on the box and the blue inlaid crown.

I think it's supposed to give the feeling of Nausicaa's tunic. Blue with the turtle thing on the front though I agree with you. The Laputa collab watch looks nicer than this.

I don't like Seiko in general but I love Nausicaa. I'm conflicted.

Actually I just saw the pre-order price for the Philippines. 1,900 USD. Very hard pass.

What the fuck. A 6R51 for $1,900? Fuck that noise. Now if it's a 6S movement, maybe but a 6R? Hell no.

It's the turtle thing for me, feels slapped on.

Same, this feels too lazy for seiko compared to their Laputa watch.

Way better.

I roughly converted. It's really 1811.60 USD in Philippine peso. Same difference I suppose.

That is still too much. Heck, my Alpinist GMT LE isn't that pricey.

·

Beautiful dial and caseback

·

Again, not a good one, these are just boring.

The only decent Ghibli tie-in watch they have is that Porco Rosso chronograph. That is a Seiko that made me look twice… it’s also very expensive.

·

This is the only Ghibli I know. Better suited for grown men.

I prefer the other one. These looks nice but there's no way I'm paying for their service.

·

Am I the only one who thought of this Ghibli first?

£1540 uk price

That is too much. Jeez, Seiko's really milking the Ghibli connection here. Either that or the director of Ghibli made Seiko an offer they couldn't refuse.

I’m not a fan to be fair, not keen on the turtle badge, I don’t like badges like that on watches

Exactly my reaction. "Hmm maybe this would be it... At that price?! Heck no!"

·

I actually think Alba as their sub-premium brand have more tasteful collab watches. But I think all of them are quartz watches.

·

I own the Laputa Castle in the Sky Ghibli collab, great watch 👍🏽

I'm definitely a Ghibli fan and Nausicaä has been a favorite since I was a kid. So, I got very briefly excited when I first heard about this, only to be immediately let down. It's one of the most low-effort collabs I've ever seen. 😐

The caseback is more interesting than the dial and the best looking part of the whole package is the box. They had a chance to work with one of the world's most beloved IPs and they phoned it in. 😒

·

Thanks for sharing. I love Studio Ghibli and never heard of these collaborations, but seeing the Laputa one as you shared, it does feel simpler. It has an enamel dial, which looks nice. But yeah, will pass for a future collab! What was the best collab in your opinion?

It's not super gundam-y. I gotta keep an eye on these in the future. I'd love a spirited away collaboration, Totoro, or princess mononoke

Spirited Away is by far my favourite. That girl on the cusp of adolescence in the back of the car, her look and way of acting. 💯.

Many of the obake in the movie are lessor known but portrayed wonderfully

I’d love a high end watch devoted to it.

@Beanhead - Porco Rosso has had the best collabs, quite high end. I've been tempted on those occasionally. They very much fit the movie and would last a lifetime of use.

A column wheel chrono and a spring drive, both with enamel dials

This Naussica is interesting, but yeah, the movement 🧐

It’s is a great flick, quite old now but a classic ghibli in style and environmental theme.

I was tempted, but my daughter’s opinion on it was ‘meh’

I think they did the collaboration well, quite subtle.

An ‘old & weathered’ case, a blue cabochon, the uniform symbol - it’s like a watch one of the characters would be wearing

If I’m able to see it, and it’s amazing in person, I might still pick one up 🙂🤷‍♂

I was tempted by the Nausicaa one too, but I need more discipline!

Thanks for sharing the porco Rosso one. The white is nice and I like how the power reserve kinda looks like a fuel gauge. I like porco Rosso, but don't love it. So, I'll hold off for a spirited away collab!ci LOVE that movie. Makes me feel nostalgic as all heck. Everything about the movie is perfect

Not sure how the collaboration will look... A blacked out watch for No face? A whimsical, yet serious colorway for chihiro? Something lighter colored for haku... Opulent, wood feel one for the bathhouse? A funny white one for the turnip dude?

OMG. You and I would design a couple of epic watches for that epic movie. 🍻 And obviously choose 9R or 9S movements 😉

We re watched again this evening. Always pick up new details. Did you notice the stop before Swamp Bottom, Numa no Soko is called 'Moor Bottom' (Numa Hara)? It's where some ghostly kaishain get off. Hara done with the kanji for 'moor, or plain, or tundra'.

When I was last living in Japan, we lived a a rural area in Himeji. I liked going on long distance bike rides in the mountains. My favorite was coming across silent vistas and views that made me feel I was in a Ghilbi movie, in real life.

This tunnel was too small for cars (built in a pre automotive era?) and on a rural mountain road that got smaller and smaller and in a deeper and deeper forest, until reaching this ancient brick tunnel.

I very much expected to come out in the spirit realm on the far side.

I will rewatch it, but this time with my son! I hope he doesn't get scared.

That photo is somewhat anxiety inducing as you don't know what's on the other side, but it's also exciting in the spirit of exploration. I'm sure that's what chihiro felt when arriving there with her parents. I recall she was clinging to her dad's leg.

I might email Seiko and volunteer ourselves to make the watch! Haha

If/when we live there again, I plan to try and insert myself with the company in some kind of capacity. If successful, I'll scheme to make our watch a reality!!!

That would be a dream job. Maybe you can do part time there and part time at GS 🤣
