Should I sit on the “list”

So I’m luck/unlucky to be on the “list” thanks to my niece buying one. I’ve always wanted a no date subbie and never thought I would get the opportunity or the approval from the minister for war and finance. But after almost a year of waiting and watching every YouTube video..I’m starting to doubt my decision because 1. You can’t wear it all the time due to the increasing number of thefts and 2. This is not the best purchase experience. So I would like to hear your thoughts and stories…thanks!

ABSOLUTELY no question whatsoever you should stay on the list.

  • If the AD calls you and sells you the watch at MSRP, the AD is literally handing you thousands of dollars of free money
  • At that point, you can either a) flip it and make a few thousand bucks profit, or b) decide to keep it and wear it
  • It's a zero-cost option, so why not?
  • If you stay on the list, get a call, and you decide not to buy it, just go ahead and buy it, and then I'll buy it from you for MSRP, and then flip it and make a few thousand dollars myself!  😜

In the meantime, life is short.  Why in the world are you waiting around?  You could get hit by a bus tomorrow!  If you're devoted to Swiss, just go get yourself an Omega, which has lower MSRP and same and/or better build quality.  Though, the better play would be to buy a Grand Seiko, which will give you a level of finishing that no Swiss equivalent can replicate for anything under 3x the price.  Better yet, get a GS spring drive, and you'll have something no other watchmaker in the world can replicate at any price.

Good luck!!!

Welcome to the world of Rolex ADs! You won't be the first or last to have this buying experience. Having said, I think you should keep going because:

  1.  The expense has been approved.
  2. You're already 1 year into this journey. Why toss that away?!

I'll be the voice of dissent, forget the Rolex if there is something else you want just as much.

Every month you wait watches get can more expensive, and you have one less month to enjoy your new watch. If the Minister of Finance has already approved the funds, spend them on something you will enjoy.

Do you have any history with the AD, or are you hoping your niece gets one for you? I do hate to say it, but there is little chance of getting one on your own without a personal history if you just wait around for a call. I know that is not the best experience, but until there’s a better way for an AD that’s what we have to do.

In most cases, lists are something ADs say they keep, but truly don’t. In all honesty, unless you are already in their CRM with history, you’re likely not getting a call. You’d stand a better chance occasionally popping in and having polite discussions with an SA. You may get lucky and one day they pull one out of the back for you.

Don’t doubt your decision, if you want one, get it. Chances of someone stealing it is astronomically low, 99.9999% of people will never notice you watch. Cover it in areas you don’t feel safe and you should be fine.

Have you ever worn a submariner? I though I wanted one until I wore one. It was anticlimactic for me.  I'd say if your AD really has a list, stay on it and buy it when you get the call. As previously discussed, it's a no lose proposition. Do bear in mind, some ad's are withholding the warranty cards for 12 months to prevent flipping so don't buy it on credit. (Or any watch for that matter)

For me it depends on the AD. I bought a Cartier Santos for my wife at an independent AD (not a Rolex/Tudor-only boutique). They very super friendly and helpful. Recently, I’ve been to Rolex boutiques and they very somewhat snooty about the List. “We want to make sure we sell only to our serious customers“.

No thanks.

Stay on the list - it's literally free money if you can buy MSRP. And If you like chunky/edgy watches and your wrist supports it: Rolex Deepsea; I love the blue/black dial ❤

This was my exact experience. I know I'm going to catch some heat on this, but I owned a 2017 Sub date and I was like, "meh". Truth be told, I really wanted the GMT Master II Batman because one of my favorite colors is blue, so that may have played a role. I did enjoy the glide lock and wearability overall.

I'd say stick with it. Best case scenario you get the watch you want, create a relationship with an AD and get more Rolexes. It is unfortunate that we have to do this, but this is how things are done today, unfortunately.

I agree the list is a no cost option, but i wouldn’t hesitate to get something else if you want. You can always pass if your name comes up.

Thank you all very much for your opinions..such great feedback.

im going to sit it out and hopefully one day I’ll get the call.

I’ll just have to sneak in a couple of cheapie’s without the minister noticing ! That should scratch the itch till hopefully the no date subbie arrives.
