Should I quit Rolex?

I have a dream of owning a white dial Daytona. Now, these are not easy to get. Some might say impossible. But I have a plan.

I have a Submariner and a Batgirl (I'm not an a-hole over nicknames) and my AD tells me that I am 'on the list' for a Daytona, but will not give a timescale. I've talked to her about buying an Oyster Perpetual this year. Maybe, maybe the Daytona might appear in 2025? I'll be 60 then, so it would commemorate this milestone birthday.

Or do I give up this whole dream, sell the Rollies and buy the entire CW catalogue? While I hold the Daytona dream, there is no money for anything else.

Ask yourself if you are done jumping through hoops and buying watches you don't want, only to perhaps be given the authorization to spend yet another $16k on the watch you wanted in the first place, but had to spend twice that amount before even being considered.

And after already spending north of $30k you're not even sure you will be allocated a Daytona? That's insanity.

·

I would stay patient and wait, it will be worth it. 🙂🙃

This is the madness of Rolex. I've got two watches I love, but it's the uncertain wait for the grail.

I actually didn't start off wanting the Daytona. I wanted the Batgirl first, but you can't have that without the Sub. Then I wanted (needed?) the Daytona.

That's the kind of confirmation I need!

If your feelings are that you are in good terms with your AD I think playing the 6 0 card alone will get you the Daytona. Just make sure they are fully aware.

·

There’s no guarantee you’ll get one which I guess is the issue.

Do you really want the OP? Or just buying thinking this will potentially get me the Daytona?

Presume the white dial and steel variant? Ceramic bezel? What’s RRP £14k? Rolex OPs 41 RRP £5.5k, so close to £20k overall on a watch you may not want but does include the Daytona.

Second hand from greys with warranty are at £23k so potentially just a bit more than you were willing to spend. Plus factor in the yearly price rises not far off if you don’t mind pre owned and want it now. (This does include you buying the OP).

However have you tried a Daytona? They wear small & for a chronograph isn’t alway ideal. If you do plan on using the watch at a chronograph having to unscrew the pushers would become annoying. I get the appeal they look great and I know the halo of Rolex and flex and all that.

If a white dial chronograph you are after have you considered the white dial Speedy? Personally that looks better and potentially easier to get.

·

If the Daytona is what you want, wait for the Daytona. Don’t buy watches you don’t want, but be patient. Mine came when I wasn’t expecting it and kinda gave up hope.

·

I do love the OP AND it potentially gets me closer to the Daytona!

Daytona RRP is £13,200 for now. Probably £14k next year.

I'm going to try the Daytona later in the year (my AD is not local). But I have a 7" wrist, so I think it may be perfect. I'm not planning to use the chronograph. I can't swim and I don't like flying either, so that makes my other watches surplus to actual requirements too!

I like the white dial Speedy, but is that 42mm?

Same for me. I didn't think I would get it. Then when I gave up, the phone rang.

I understand its different everywhere and it's easier to just get all the other watches. As one here said, if you want it badly, and it is your grail, be patient (easier said than done, I know) but hope this helps.,

Unmmm….just find one on the grey market in good condition. Trade in the other Rolexes for it (if you need…but it appears you don’t). You can have one tomorrow without adding the expense of the op (you can use the $$$ on the grey vs retail premium)

·

I’ve had a pretty positive experience with my AD. I was able to secure a new GMT Master II in a few months. My only purchase was sending my two older Rolexes to the RSC. The hype for Rolex has slowly calmed down and their production is ramping up. If you express an interest and you’re patient you’ll have one before your 60th. I certainly wouldn’t purchase anything for the opportunity to spend more unless it’s something I want.

The Daytona is your dream watch and you are almost 60.

Be realistic, statistically you have "only" 24 years left to live, and you don´t know how many of them in good health.

You know how time flies by, I am around your age, 57, and the older you get the faster time seems to fly by.

I would get that Daytona NOW, get it from the grey market and enjoy it...why wait ?

I know I wait for nothing any more at my age, I buy everything I want within my budget, even if I have to pay a premium for it.....it´s now you have to enjoy things in life.....there IS NO later for us at our age.......unless your plan is to become one of the richest guys in the cemetary.

Just my opinion...😎

It's a very good point. I actually nearly died in August 23, I had an improperly diagnosed burst appendix.

I just can't bring myself to go grey, yet. I think if I don't get it next year, then I will go grey.

I have the budget for the OP and the Daytona, but that's it. Unless I get an inheritance.

It’s a great watch, but to be honest, I didnt wear it much during winter/spring. For my liking, it’s more of a summer/fall watch.

As we approach the summer season, I’ll start to wear it more often.

·

I won’t jump through hoops for any watch. I have no interest in playing games. Either it’s available and I buy it, or it’s not available and I set my sights on something else.

·

I have purchased numerous RLX watches from a Rolex AD... five in all in the past three years and would never even be considered for a Daytona unless I spend $100K on "stuff" for my wife. The Douchebaggery these guys put you thorough is ludicrous. I have been on a wait list for a 226570 Polar now for +2 years... still waiting...................... On principle, I refuse to pay grey market pricing.

·

My AD only sells Rolex. At least I don't have to do the jewellery nonsense.

Hold out for the Daytona. I have 3 Rolex and I think the OP is actually my favorite they are awesome.

·

May I suggest that part of your decision-making process include trying on the Daytona? I bought one, without trying one on first, for all the same reasons everyone else buys them and ended up selling it after 6 months.

·

I’m in the same boat and I’m waiting for a two tone GMT on jubilee. It’s the same way I got my Hulk and the same way I got my SS Wimbledon fluted jubilee. I’ve built my collection to a point that I no longer mind waiting for the right watches. Just like I’ve waited for my CW Ceilo blue Bel Canto for the past year. Don’t give up on you dream watch. They’re the big fish, the ones you appreciate the most once you have’em🥃

·

Be patient or go Grey market. Everything can be had for a price.

·

It may be different where you are located. where I live, the people who get those didn't buy a few watches but spent the equivalent of a 2 bedroom apartment at that shop, think 250,000€ or so. The Daytona is basically to be seen as a 15,000€ gift, because that's what it is. If you spent low 6 figures, that is a 10% to 15% discount on those purchases.

Either way, I hope they offer it to you 🤞

I've handled the GS Snowflake twice and nearly bought it. I really liked it, but if I get that, then there won't be enough money left for the OP and Daytona.

But yes, a super-cool watch with amazing tech. I will get one, one day.

I don't have to make a fool of myself at the AD. I make an appointment, we talk, we have drinks, we have chocolate, I use the toilet and put on the Rolex aftershave, She lets me know what I can have.

You can get the Snowflake pretty „cheap“ comparing to the retail price.

The last sentence is the crucial point. Maybe „making a fool out of myself“ wasn’t the right phrasing but I meant it.

I’m not „asking“ anyone what I can please get. I let her know that I decided on THAT watch which is being presented and then I want to pay it and leave.

All the other pleasantries are also available for any other brand. With the crucial point that I don’t have to play the game of anyone…

I understand. But for most of us, a Rolex purchase involves a little bit of a game.

Not for me. I simply refuse playing it.

ESPECIALLY since it’s a new „phenomenon“ and Rolex actively supports that insanity.

Back in the good ol‘ days you could walk in, check the watches on display and then check out with watch on wrist (sometimes even with a discount).

·

I would go grey market. Find a reputable dealer and get one. Time=Money. Going through the games of buying watches you don’t want for the hope of an AD to grant you a Daytona is challenging in my opinion. I went through that with a Rolex AD purchasing 8 watches i didn’t’ want to be on “the list” then the AD got dropped by Rolex. My buy pattern didn’t help anywhere. So, I took what i had to the grey market and got what i wanted.

Time is money, but right now, I have more time than money. I've enough for the next two watches.

Bad news about the AD losing the franchise. My AD is Rolex only, so hopefully won't get dropped!

Respectfully, it's not the good old days now and I didn't want a Rolex then.

If you've already got what you want, it's easy to stop playing.
