Once you are in the right category, what is your top priority when picking a new watch (not a grail) that costs more than $10,000.

A,B,C and never D.

In thinking about it, if it’s an expensive watch D matters to me more than if it is inexpensive. I’ll try to improve the question.

Would never spend that much on something that wasn’t a grail

It’s a combination of A,B,C

Dial - I’m all about the dial nowadays. I want something interesting. Was looking at this earlier today because the dial just pops!

Brand - for me, this is important as I would like to put it into a company that I know will be around for years to come. The warranty aspect has become an important part - if there is some sort of defect, I like the comfort knowing the company will be around if there are issues.

Bracelet- I’ve passed on many watches because the bracelet was lackluster. I hate when ADs tell me I can switch out the band. I tell them, are you going to discount and sell me just the watch face? No, they’re not so bracelet is an important part of the watch.

Resale- while it’s nice to know I can resell, it’s not a factor when deciding on purchasing a watch.

Spending money is rarely binary. It is a combination of all of the above, plus movement, plus heritage, value, materials, and originality.

I honestly look at the brands first. I want to experience many manufacturers. I like having the different styles, dials and designs. I never want to be one brand heavy. That seems like no fun

It is more than any one of those items. It’s a function of many factors combined.

Agreed! Just what is most important?

Agreed! Just what is most important?

None are most important. For example:

  1. GS can make a great dial but put it in a chunky case with an unfortunate bracelet.

  2. IWC can make a fantastic bracelet and put it on a boring, overpriced pilot watch.

  3. Panerai can make the perfect watch but it’s not a trustworthy company and treats it’s customers with utter contempt.

  4. I don’t generally consider resale but I’m not about to buy a Blancpain new from an AD.

There has to be a balance of design, quality, features and desirability. No single thing can tip the scale in favour but many things can be a deal breaker.

If everything is most important nothing is most important.

This

And before them all, size.

Different watches for different reasons...lately I've been considering dials....sometimes it's movements...occasionally it's a brand....it all depends
